May Celebrations
Celebration Ideas for May 14 – 20, 2018

We’ve been constantly surprised lately by just how long daylight hours have gotten. Those 8 pm sunsets have somehow snuck up on us this year!

But those extra hours of light just mean more time for celebrations.

(Yes, yes, you can celebrate at night even when it’s dark … but it’s a different feeling. And we’re ready for the summery feeling of celebrating late while it’s still light.)

So it is, once again, time to take a peak at some of the celebrations happening next week.

Then make a plan, and most of all …

Enjoy!

Celebrate for the Rest of May

The end of May kicks off the unofficial start of summer, so it’s appropriate to be thinking about fun water activities … and water safety.

And of course, easy, delicious, foods that are also nutritious. Eggs & salsa fit that bill!

National Water Safety Month: The weather’s warming up and it’s time to go swimming (and boating and other water-related fun)! Which means it’s also the perfect time to refresh your memory on water safety.

National Salsa Month: The perfect excuse to eat salsa every day! Not that we need an excuse … And if you’re looking for more variety than the standard tomato-based salsa, well check out these 15 recipes & never be bored again!

National Egg Month: If you love eggs, this is the month for you. So learn a bit more about eggs & egg nutrition. Then find yourself some new recipes for enjoying them for more than breakfast.

This week’s week-long celebrations have a medical theme. Taking care of your own health and being sensitive to other’s health challenges are always worth celebrating.

Food Allergy Awareness Week (May 13 – 19): Raise awareness of food allergies and help create safer environments for those with food allergies. The website offers lots of downloadable resources you can use to get the word out.

National Women’s Health Week (May 13 – 19): This week encourages women to take control of their health. It’s never too late to learn to live a healthier life!

National Skilled Nursing Care Week (May 13 – 19): This week celebrates skilled nursing care centers, the care they give, and the residents they serve. It used to be called National Nursing Home Week.

Celebration Days Coming up for May 14 thru May 20

So what can you do once Mother’s Day is over and Memorial Day is still 2 weeks away?

Plenty!

Start by chasing away the Monday blues with the Chicken Dance. Seriously, who can be grumpy while looking that silly?

Then move on to sliders & chocolate chips … on the same day! Enjoy them while wearing a straw hat.

There’s also sea monkeys, Syttende Mai, your relatives, strawberries, rescue dogs, and more.

You know what to do now, right? …

Pick your favorite days and plan a fun-tastic week!

May 14:

National Dance Like a Chicken Day: Yes, it’s time to do the Chicken Dance! C’mon, you know you want to. It’s fun! And on May 14 you have an actual excuse to look goofy doing this dance. You’re welcome. :)

Underground America Day: This day celebrates Americans who live underground. No, not in caves or bunkers … but close! These people have built their homes almost completely in the ground instead of on top of the ground.

Stars and Stripes Forever Day: Celebrate the anniversary of the 1st performance of the US’s official march, The Stars and Stripes Forever. That performance took place just outside Philadelphia on May 14, 1897.

May 15:

National Chocolate Chip Day: Yum! Put chocolate chips in everything you eat today! Or if that’s too much for you at least try a new creative recipe or two. These recipes look interesting.

National Slider Day: This day celebrates those little bundles of delight, the White Castle sliders! You do know there’s only one way to celebrate, right? Like usual, you can get a free slider, or take advantage of other deals if you prefer.

Straw Hat Day: Apparently it is time to put away the winter hats & get out the straw hats for summer. Don’t have a straw hat? What’s wrong with you!? (Just kidding). But seriously, get yourself a straw hat.

May 16:

National Sea Monkey Day: Did you have sea monkeys as a kid? Would you like to hatch some again? National Sea Monkey Day is the perfect day to do that! … You do know they’re not monkeys, right?

National Mimosa Day: Drink mimosas! But you don’t have to stick with the “traditional” mimosa. Here are 3 recipes that put delicious twists on this bubbly refresher. Enjoy!

National Juice Slush Day: In the spirit of drinking responsibly, may we suggest you alternate between celebrating Mimosa Day and Juice Slush Day? And of course, the kids can celebrate this one with you!

May 17:

Pack Rat Day: Are you a pack rat? Then this is your day! Use it to actually use some of the things you’ve been saving for “someday.” Or use it to purge … leaving you room for a whole new collection! Either way, embrace your pack-rattiness.

Syttende Mai: It’s Norwegian National Day, an official holiday in Norway. “But we’re in the US,” you say? Well, if you’re Norwegian or you know someone who is, celebrate anyway! And in case you’re wondering just what you’re celebrating: the anniversary of the signing of Norway’s Constitution in 1814. If you’re looking for a real party for the day, Seattle throws a big one!

World Hypertension Day: Do you know your blood pressure numbers? The goal of this day is to raise awareness of high blood pressure. And encourage everyone to “Know Your Numbers.”

May 18:

Endangered Species Day: On this day we recognize that thousands of species, big and small, are in danger of disappearing from the earth forever.

Visit Your Relatives Day: Have you visited family members recently? Or have you been too busy. Too angry. Too … something? Well, May 18 is the day to set aside whatever’s been stopping you and go visit them. No, don’t wait for them to celebrate this day by visiting you. You go visit them … although maybe make sure they aren’t actually coming to see you. Missing each other that way is not the point of this day!

NASCAR Day: On this day the NASCAR community (from drivers to sponsors to fans) join together to raise funds for charity.

May 19:

May Ray Day: Get outside and soak up some rays! Safely, of course. Wear sunscreen. If the sun’s not shining, our post has a few other Rays you could consider celebrating instead …

National Scooter Day: Scooters aren’t just for kids! The whole family can enjoy this fun & active way to get around. So skip the car & scoot to the park! This is apparently a relatively new day, started in 2016.

Do Dah Day: A giant festival at Birmingham’s Historic Highland Parks (Alabama). But it’s not just for locals. Nope, apparently people from all over the country show up. They have tons of fun and raise lots of money for Jefferson County animal shelters.

May 20:

Pick Strawberries Day: Fresh-picked, perfectly ripe strawberries beat store-bought hands down. And today’s the day to get out there & pick some. Can’t make it on the 20th? At least use the day to plan a strawberry-picking adventure for one day soon.

National Rescue Dog Day: Let a rescue dog adopt you! Or, if you already share your life with a rescue dog, share your story. Can’t adopt a rescue dog? Volunteer, foster, or donate. It all helps!

Ride a Unicycle Day: This day kicks off a whole week of unicycle madness! Errr… fun … we meant unicycle fun. So get on that unicycle & ride. Or learn to ride. The Unicycling Society of America (yes, there’s a society) offers some tips on learning to ride a unicycle.
