May Celebrations
Celebration Ideas for May 7 – 13, 2018

Can you believe Mother’s Day is at the end of the week? Yikes!

On the bright side, the weather has finally warmed up here. Although for a few days it felt like we skipped spring completely. But this week looks like more seasonal temperatures.

So it’s time to get out in the garden!

How about you? Are the temperatures to your liking these days? Are you itching to dig in the dirt? (Make sure to protect yourself from the sun while you’re out there!)

However you like to spend your days, find a special day or two to celebrate this week. We’ve got a bit of almost everything, so you’re sure to find something right up your alley.

From jumping frogs to free ice cream. Also Cosmos, limericks, nutty fudge, sharks, and much more.

As usual, take a peek at the upcoming week & make a plan.

And most of all …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All May Long

This week we highlight some health-related awareness campaigns that run all month long.

As the weather gets nicer, and we spend more time outside enjoying the sunshine, it’s worth remembering to protect ourselves from the bad part of that sunshine: the UV rays. And not just our skin, either!

Also, too many people still don’t understand either Lyme Disease or Lupus. Let’s help change that.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month: Learn how to protect yourself from all forms of skin cancer (hint: sun protection!). Also learn about the different kinds of skin cancer & how to recognize them.

Ultraviolet Awareness Month: To go along with skin cancer awareness, we have UV awareness. Did you know it’s not just your skin that needs protection from UV rays? Your eyes do too!

Lyme Disease Awareness Month: Learn more about this disease, how to protect yourself (and your pets!), how to recognize symptoms, and more. If you want to get more involved, consider helping with fundraisers or educational programs.

Lupus Awareness Month: Did you know most people still know very little about this disease? Help change that!

Weekly Celebrations For May 7 – 13, 2018

For this 2nd week in May we celebrate nature and our pets. We also learn more about stuttering and let stutterers know they’re not alone.

National Wildflower Week (May 6 – 12): Celebrate native wildflowers this week (and all year long!). Learn what plants are native to your area & plant those all around your yard. And get rid of non-native and invasive plants. Your local wildlife will thank you.

National Pet Week (May 6-12): Celebrate your pets and make sure you’re giving them the best life possible.

National Stuttering Awareness Week (May 7 – 13): Do you stutter? Or know someone who does? This week is all about spreading awareness and educating people about stuttering. And letting stutterers know you’re not alone!

Celebration Days Coming Up For May 7 thru May 13, 2018

Other than Mother’s Day on the 13th, what can you celebrate this week?

Plenty!

Free ice cream, lost socks, and root canals! Ok, ok, only one of those is really a positive kind of celebration. But the other two are still options.

Maybe jumping frogs, Moscato, and nutty fudge are more to your liking?

On the serious side, there’s making sure you have a plan for your animals in case of disaster, protecting sharks and migrating birds, and more.

So take a look, pick your favorite fun, silly, or serious days and make a plan.

Then have a fun-tastic week!

May 7:

Cosmopolitan Day: The drink. Not the magazine. So enjoy a Cosmo or 2 in celebration.

National Packaging Design Day: Huh? Seems like a weird day, doesn’t it? But think about it: Some products are instantly recognizable by their packaging. Now isn’t that worth celebrating? And the people who thought up those amazing packaging designs, too! How to celebrate? Check out these ideas from Design Packaging (the day’s creator).

National Barrier Awareness Day: This is a day to recognize and work to abolish barriers that sometimes still confront people with disabilities. Although the world has become much more accessible since Ronald Reagan first proclaimed the day in 1986, we can still do better. So this day lives on to remind us to do that.

May 8:

Animal Disaster Preparedness Day: Do you have a plan for keeping everyone safe in case of a disaster? Does it include your animals? If not, revise it and add them! Even if it does, review it to make sure it still works for your current animals.

Free Cone Day: “Wait,” you say. “Didn’t we just have a free cone day a few weeks ago?” Why yes. Yes we did. But that was a different free cone day. This one is from Häagen-Dazs. So walk into your local Häagen-Dazs shop (between 4 pm & 8 pm) to claim your free one-scoop cone (or cup)!

No Socks Day: Free your toes from their fabric prison! And create a bit less laundry for one day. A win-win all around!

May 9:

Lost Sock Memorial Day: Today we observe a moment of silence for all the lost socks that have gone before us. Maybe even throw a party to celebrate their lives. Why? Why not?!

National Moscato Day: Don’t just enjoy a glass or two in celebration of this day. Try cooking with it too! These recipes look like a delicious place to start.

Bike to School Day: This one seems pretty self-explanatory! Is your child’s school participating?

May 10:

World Lupus Day: Lupus can be confusing and hard to diagnose, because symptoms can be vague and often look like other conditions. And most people still don’t know what it is. This day aims to help change that.

World Migratory Bird Day: Migrating birds face many threats all along their travels. We can all help protect them.

May 11:

Root Canal Appreciation Day: This day was started by a dentist to help people better understand root canals. Apparently they’re not as horrendous as we believe. He even did a root canal at a ball park! ????

Eat What You Want Day: Forget about the diet and the should eat/shouldn’t eat/can’t eat mantras you keep feeding yourself for one day. Instead, eat whatever your little heart desires. Now if you shouldn’t/can’t eat something for a true medical reason—like you’re allergic or it interacts with your medications—then don’t eat it today either. But everything else is on the table … literally!

Fintastic Friday: Giving Sharks, Skates, and Rays a Voice Day: Spread the word and help protect sharks and their elasmobranch cousins the sharks and rays. (What the heck is an elasmobranch?)

May 12:

Limerick Day: Do you love limericks? Then this day is for you! Read some limericks. Write some limericks (they don’t have to be good!). Share some limericks. It’s all up to you!

National Nutty Fudge Day: Yum! Indulge in your favorite creamy, chewy, nut-filled fudge concoction. Did you know we don’t actually know who first created the deliciousness that is fudge?

Odometer Day: Yes, that little gauge showing how far you’ve driven your car has its very own day. Why? No clue!

May 13:

Frog Jumping Day: Yes, we’re celebrating jumping frogs. Do you have a frog? How high can it jump?

Crouton Day: On this day you must eat croutons! Preferably homemade, ‘cause those are infinitely better than anything from the store. Learn how to make croutons yourself here. It’s really simple. Promise!

International Hummus Day: Another delicious & simple day. Celebrate by eating hummus, of course. Feeling ambitious? Try one of these recipes.
