Celebration Ideas for September 2 – 8, 2019

September is here! (Or almost here, depending on when you’re reading this).

And with it comes thoughts of cooler days & falling leaves ahead. Autumn lovers are getting ready to celebrate for sure.

Of course the Labor Day weekend is our unofficial end of summer. But there’s still plenty of warm weather & sunshine to be had this month.

So while you wait for fall to really and truly arrive, check out all the other things you can be celebrating.

The entire month is all about cats & dogs. Wildlife gets a day, too. As do books & skyscrapers. Also beer, coconuts, and coffee ice cream. Even ampersands!

So do take a peek and plan your week. And as always …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All September Long

September is all about keeping our pets happy & healthy and our college students safe.

Happy Cat Month: Do you work hard to keep your cat happy & entertained? Good for you! Now do even more, because this month is all about giving your cat(s) the happiest life possible. So learn how to do that. You might discover some tricks & tips you didn’t know.

Responsible Dog Ownership Month: Don’t let your cat know about this month if you want to keep him or her happy! But if you are a doggy parent do celebrate. Remind yourself of the best ways to be a responsible dog owner and make sure you’re doing those things. It’ll make your dog as happy as your cat!

Pet Health Insurance Month: Part of being a responsible dog owner and keeping your cat happy is taking care of your pets’ health. And for many people that means having pet health insurance. Why not take some time during this month to learn more about this insurance & see if it might be right for you and your pet(s).

National Campus Safety Awareness Month (NSAM): Is your (or your child’s) college or university campus safe? We sure hope so. But since campuses aren’t isolated from the world, they can suffer the same violence as anywhere else. This month is about having conversations about the problem and how to promote campus safety.

Weekly Celebrations for September’s 1st Week

This week we protect our kids from injury, keep learning, and eat waffles. And we do it all with enthusiasm!

International Enthusiasm Week (September 1 – 7, 2019): Do everything with enthusiasm for this week! Yes, that means finding ways to be enthusiastic about the things you’re not enthusiastic about.

Self-University Week (September 1 – 7, 2019): Never stop learning! This week reminds us that education shouldn’t stop when we leave school. We can and should keep learning as long as we live. Because there’s more to know than we can ever know. But that’s no reason not to try!

National Waffle Week (September 1 – 7, 2019): For this week we eat waffles! And with so many different ways to make ‘em & top ‘em, we can have different waffles every day. And for dinner, even. Hello chicken & waffles!

National Childhood Injury Prevention Week: As a parent you obviously want to do all you can to protect your kids from injury. But are you sure you’re taking all the right steps? It’s hard to be sure. This week is about learning more about the most common causes of childhood injuries and how best to prevent them. Find safety tips for all kinds of situations here.

Celebration Days coming up for Sept. 2 thru Sept. 8

Of course Monday in Labor Day in the US. And you’ll no doubt be celebrating. But that’s not all there is to celebrate on Monday. Or the rest of the week. You’ll want to add coconut & blueberry popsicles to your Labor Day picnics.

And then you’ll want to do a late summer “spring cleaning,” celebrate wildlife, and read a book.

There’s also beer to drink, macadamia nuts to eat, and procrastination to fight. Plus lots more to make it yet another fun-tastic week!

September 2:

National V-J Day: Commemorate the official end of World War II on the anniversary of the signing of the Japanese surrender. You may also have celebrated on Aug. 14-15, the anniversary of the announcement of Japan’s surrender.

World Coconut Day: Celebrate the delicious & versatile coconut! Eat coconut. Moisturize hair & skin with coconut oil. Quench thirst with coconut water. So many ways to use this fruit (or nut? … seed?), but so little time!

National Blueberry Popsicle Day: Last week it was cherry popsicles. This week blueberries get a turn! Here’s a simple 3-ingredient blueberry-yogurt popsicle recipe for you to try.

Great Bathtub Race: If it’s Labor Day, you can be sure people are pushing tubs full of water (and a bather!) down Front Street in Nome, Alaska. Why? Because then-mayor Leo Rasmussen came up with the idea back in 1978. And apparently the wacky event is kinda’ popular!

September 3:

Skyscraper Day: On this day we celebrate those awe-inspiring buildings that seem to touch the sky. And they just seem to keep getting taller. Is there a limit?

Another Look Unlimited Day: On the day after Labor Day we take another look around our homes & identify things we no longer have a use for. Then we either find new uses for them or donate them so someone else can enjoy them. (Obviously if it’s broken or otherwise unusable throw it out!). Why? Because “spring cleaning” shouldn’t just happen once a year in the spring. We accumulate stuff all year, so we should purge periodically throughout the year too!

National Welsh Rarebit Day: If you love cheese sauce, this day’s for you! What does cheese have to do with rarebit? Isn’t rarebit another word for rabbit? Well yes, Welsh rarebit & Welsh rabbit are the same thing. But as it turns out they have nothing to do with rabbits. The dish is a cheese sauce poured over toast. Sounds delicious whatever you call it! Try this rarebit recipe that adds leeks to the sauce.

September 4:

National Wildlife Day: This day is so important there’s 2 of them! And no, not be different sponsors/creators. What started as one day to memorialize Steve Irwin on the anniversary of his death eventually became 2 days. We now celebrate the wildlife The Crocodile Hunter loved on the day of his birth (Feb. 22) and his death (Sept. 4).

National Macadamia Nut Day: Use macadamia nuts in all your cooking & baking. Of course there’s macadamia nut cookies. But that’s not all you can make! Try Macadamia-crusted Halibut for dinner. Top your pancakes or waffles with macadamias for breakfast. And snack on caramelized macadamias during the day. Or enjoy a mango-macadamia nut popsicle. Yum!

National Newspaper Carrier Day: Believe it or not, newspaper carriers still exist! Because yes, physical newspapers also still exist. And people still have them delivered to their homes. This day honors all the carriers, past and present, on the date 10-year-old Blarney Flaherty became the very first paperboy in 1833.

September 5:

Jury Rights Day: Celebrate the anniversary of a case the led to important protections for juries. Namely that courts cannot punish them for voting their conscience. Which is exactly what the courts tried to do during the trial in question … even going so far as to imprison them for not returning the verdict the court wanted!

National Cheese Pizza Day: We may have rights as jurists. But for this day we have no rights to any pizza toppings other than cheese! Ok that’s not true. But to celebrate right the cheese on your pizza must not be sullied with other things. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use different cheeses to add some punch to your pizza. Get creative! But only with cheese …

September 6:

Fight Procrastination Day: This is the day to stop putting things off & just get it done! Put whatever you’ve been procrastinating about at the top of your to-do list and tackle it head on. You’ll be rewarded with a feeling of accomplishment!

Read a Book Day: For some of us it’s just not a good thing that this day falls on the same day as Fight Procrastination Day. Because reading a book is the perfect way to procrastinate pretty much anything! But don’t do that. Get your stuff done and reward yourself with time to read. Maybe even make it family reading time. That should be motivation for everybody to stop procrastinating so they can start reading! Libraries & book stores may also be having events for the day, so see if there’s something happening near you.

National Coffee Ice Cream Day: Coffee ice cream must be one of the most perfect treats. And you get to celebrate it all day long. So buy a pint (or 2) of your favorite coffee ice cream. Or make your own. Or get creative & try this Coffee Ice Cream Fudge Cake.Whatever you do, just make sure you have enough of the stuff to last you (and your friends & family) all day long!

September 7:

National Salami Day: Add salami to everything you eat for this day! It’s not really that hard. Salami with your eggs for breakfast. Salami on your sandwich or in pasta or a salad for lunch. Salami on (or in?) your dinner burger. Voila! You’ve celebrate the day correctly.

National Acorn Squash Day: Stuff an acorn squash with rice, veggies, & salami to celebrate 2 days at once! Or prepare your acorn squash your favorite way as a side for your salami. There’s no wrong way to celebrate! (Except without acorn squash … ).

National Beer Lovers Day: Choose a beer that pairs well with salami & acorn squash, and you’ve got yourself a fabulous meal! You might also like to see if your favorite bar is having any specials or events to celebrate the day. And if it’s not, ask why not!

National Grateful Patient Day: We’ve all been patients at one time or another, and we’ve all had medical professionals, family, and friends help us through. So we all have someone to be grateful to. This is the day to express that appreciation. It doesn’t matter how big or small your medical issue was. If you’re grateful for the help & care others gave you, let them know!

September 8:

National Pet Memorial Day: Honor all your pets, both past & present. The International Association of Pet Cemeteries ad Crematories founded this day, and member organizations hold events in honor of the day each year. See if there’s one near you to join other pet parents in celebration.

National Ampersand Day: Use ampersands wherever you can all day long!

National Hug Your Hound Day: Do as the name says & hug your hound(s). Don’t have any? Hug your friends’ hounds (assuming they like you, of course …)!
