Celebrate Take Your Child To The Library Day The First Saturday in February

Take Your Child to the Library Day - 1st Sat in Feb

The 1st Saturday in February is
Take Your Child to the Library Day

Cold, dreary February days are perfect for spending the weekend curled up with a good book. So it’s fitting for the first Saturday of the month to be Take Your Child to The Library Day.

And it’s definitely a day worth celebrating. It doesn’t matter if it’s your child’s first visit or just another weekly visit.

Why?

Because a love of reading can lead to a lifetime of learning and enjoyment.

And remember, there are lots of things to discover at the library even for kids that can’t yet read. Picture books, for example. And simple stories for mom or dad to read to them.

Take Your Child to the Library Day was started by children’s librarian Nadine Lipman in 2012. She and fellow librarian Caitlin Augusta ran the original blog and Facebook page.

The day’s official page is now here.

If you haven’t been to the library in a while, you might be picturing the dead-silent, tomblike atmosphere of your own childhood. But today libraries are much more vibrant (although you’ll still need to be reasonably quiet!). And many have dedicated children’s areas where kids can be kids.

So go rediscover the library with your children.

Celebrating Take Your Child To The Library Day

Individuals

Many local libraries have special programs and events to celebrate this day. So check with yours to see what’s coming up that your child might enjoy.

Programs are not all necessarily held on the official date. Some libraries hold events all weekend or even for a whole week. So if you see something interesting, make sure you note the date and time.

We’ve seen libraries have authors or book characters visit, games, crafts, story time and more.

And of course, it’s the perfect day to get your child (and even yourself!) a library card if he or she doesn’t already have one.

Libraries

Libraries that plan to join the celebration can register for free to have their name listed with the official participants.

Need ideas for activities? Here’s a program guide with some great ideas (it’s by Patti Sinclair for the 2014 event, but the ideas are still just as wonderful!).
