In our busy, busy lives, it’s all too easy to forget to be thankful … and even when we feel it, we forget to say those two little words to show appreciation: Thank You!

Well, today’s the day to start remembering, on International Thank You Days.

What do you have to be thankful for, you ask? After all, so many things seem to go wrong every day:

  • Somebody’s sick
  • Someone got laid off
  • You lost out on a promotion
  • It’s mid-winter and the weather’s terrible!

But there’s also plenty to be thankful for:

  • Your loving family
  • Good friends
  • Co-workers who help out when things aren’t going so well (yes, admit it, good co-workers do exist)

So who can we thank for International Thank You Days? Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith. She created the “holidate,” as she calls them, way back in 1994.

She continued to post yearly updates on her blog every January 11 at least through 2014. Her 2013 post explains why she created this week of days to thank people who make a difference in your life.

Celebrating International Thank You Days

Say thank you to each and every person who deserves it!

Individuals

Most of us have at least one person who’s always been there for us, no matter what. Tell that person how much his or her support has meant through the years. Have more than one person? Lucky you, thank them all!

Has somebody recently gone out of their way for you? Did you remember to thank them? If not, do it this week.

Did somebody help you through a particularly difficult time or help you make a big decision? Let them know how much it meant.

And start remembering to thank each person who helps you in any way, from the smallest kindness to the biggest gestures. It’ll mean just as much to them as it does to you.

Companies

Thank your employees for all their hard work. Yes, we’ve just gotten past the holidays, and in theory you’ve thanked them with year-end bonuses and holiday parties. But that’s expected. Surprise them and do something special this week. It’ll mean more.

Thank your vendors for keeping you supplied with products and services that keep your business running.

Thank customers for buying your products and services. Maybe even run a promotion / discount this week.

So there you go: All kinds of people to thank. And only a week to do it … better get thanking!
