Pet holidays are some of our favorites. On April 21 the lucky honoree is the bulldog. That’s right, it’s Bulldogs are Beautiful Day.

And bulldogs are beautiful. Jowly, slobbery and chunky, yes. But beautiful just the same.

There does seem to be some difference of opinion on the actual date of this holiday. Most sources we found celebrate annually on April 21.

But we’ve also seen reference to the last Sunday in April and the Saturday closest to April 28th.

It does seem that early Bulldogs are Beautiful Days were held on a Saturday, and the date was near the 28th. So that may be more correct.

For now though we’re going to go with the apparently more common April 21 date.

Of course, for true bulldog lovers every day is Bulldogs are Beautiful Day. And we bet you’ll celebrate today, Saturday and Sunday. And every other day of the year.

Bulldog Trivia

How much do you know about this slightly goofy-looking (but still beautiful!) dog?

They’re actually related to Mastiffs. Descended from the ancient Asiatic Mastiff, to be exact. This strong, intelligent dog protected his master and livestock.

The generic term “bulldog” generally means the English bulldog. Other related breeds include the American bulldog, Bull Mastiff, American Pit Bull terrier and others.

Humans have long used bulldogs for “sport”.

  • In the British Isles, it was bull baiting. A group of dogs would be allowed to attack a tethered bull. The animals would hang on until the bull collapsed from exhaustion.
  • Bull baiting eventually became illegal, so people moved on to dog fighting. They bred bulldogs with terriers to create the pit bull terriers. When not trained to fight these are loving dogs protective of their families.

Sergeant Stubby was a Pit bull and a decorated WWII hero.

The bulldog is a popular mascot for high schools, universities, professional sports teams and even the military.

Lots of famous people owned/own bulldogs. Think Helen Keller, President Warren G. Harding, David Beckham, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Zac Efron.

Bulldogs aren’t necessarily easy dogs to have.

  • Their short, flat noses can cause respiratory issues that make plane trips unsafe.
  • They’re very prone to medical problems–especially hip dysplasia–when they get older.
  • Most bulldogs babies are born by Caesarean section. So breeding them is tricky.

But they’re sweet, loyal dogs that are worth the trouble!
