Celebrate National Serpent Day Every February 1

National Serpent Day - February 1

National Serpent Day is February 1

If you love snakes, then National Serpent Day is for you!

It’s a day to recognize those slithery creatures as more than a source for purses and boots. In fact, the idea is to discourage using them for those things.

So if you love snakes only for their skin, this may not be the right holiday for you to celebrate.

A Bite of Serpent History & Trivia

Throughout history serpents have been both feared and worshiped.

According to legend, the Mesoamerican deity Quetzalcoatl (the “Plumed Serpent”) came to earth in human form and brought prosperity to the Toltec capital of Tollan. His followers later welcomed Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortez with open arms because they believed he was the god returning.

Revered serpent gods exist in other belief systems, too.

On the other hand, in Christianity Satan has been known as the serpent. And, of course, it was a serpent that tempted Eve to eat that apple.

Snakes are also associated with healing. For example, the symbol of medicine is a snake wrapped around a staff.

Snakes are actually good creatures to have around. Most are not dangerous to humans and they keep the rat and mouse populations under control. Since wild rats and mice can carry dangerous diseases, they are more likely to harm us than the snakes. So the snakes are helping us, not hurting us.

Now technically snakes are not the only creature that can be called serpents. The mythical dragons are also serpents.

And so are sea serpents. But those creatures have their own day: Sea Serpent Day, celebrated on August 7.

Clearly humans have a fascination with serpents, even if we can’t decide whether to love or hate or fear them.

Ideas For Celebrating Serpent Day

Do things related to snakes, of course! Preferably something that celebrates the live animals. Not so much wearing or carrying anything made of snakeskin.

Individuals

Visit the zoo and see the snakes. Especially if the zoo is doing any Serpent Day demonstrations or programs.

Kids can draw or color pictures of serpents. Budding writers could try their hand at writing a story about serpents.

For that matter, adult writers might like to try penning a short story about serpents.

You can find other kid-friendly Snake Activities at Kidzone. You’ll find riddles, worksheets and even an online jigsaw puzzle.

Bakers have options too:

If you have a pet snake, give him (or her) an extra treat. Or buy a new branch or hide for the habitat.

Companies

If your company is pet-related, run a special related to the day. Put snake food, habitats and/or accessories on sale.

Offer training on keeping snakes.

Have a presentation on the different kinds of snakes. Show the difference between harmful and harmless snakes.

Bakeries could sell cakes/cookies shaped like or decorated with “snakes”. Or teach a baking class and make snake-themed cookies or cakes. Since not everyone is overly fond of snakes, you might want to publicize these ideas far enough in advance to get an idea of how interested your regular customers would be. You might even gain new snake-loving customers.
