National Canoe Day was a Canadian event, started by the Canadian Canoe Museum in 2007.

The museum created the day to celebrate the canoe being named one of the Seven Wonders of Canada by popular vote.

It also wanted to increase participation in Canadian paddlesports.

But according to an archive of the day’s official page, the celebration is not limited to Canada. The whole world is invited to be a part of it.

Well, was invited to be a part of it. The website no longer appears to belong to the day. So we’re guessing the Canadian Canoe Museum is no longer sponsoring the day (it’s not listed as an event on the Museum’s website either).

But that’s no reason not to celebrate if you love canoeing. Official or unofficial, sponsored or not, National Canoe Day is the excuse you need to grab your paddle & go.

So whether you’re an expert paddler or you’ve never tried it, June 26 is the day to get out on the water.

Ideas for How to Celebrate National Canoe Day

Get out and start paddling, of course!

Go out in a canoe or kayak (which is a kind of canoe), whichever you prefer. If you’re not an experienced paddler, you may not know the difference:

  • Canoe: A narrow, open boat you propel using a single-bladed paddle.
  • Kayak: A narrow boat with a covering over the ends, open only in the area where you sit. Generally propelled with a double-bladed paddle.

And it’s not about experience. It’s about having fun.

You might like to build your kids a cardboard canoe to use in the pool. Yes, you’ll need to waterproof it before using it!

Or make some little toy canoes:

Maybe end your day with a canoe-themed snack. Like the cupcakes pictured in this post. No, the post isn’t about making cupcakes, but the pictures might give you some ideas.
