Smile and be happy. On March 20 we celebrate the International Day of Happiness.

Now, some of you may have thought that March 19, Chocolate Caramel Day doubled as happiness day. After all, rich, sweet chocolate and caramel pretty much personifies happiness.

But no, this International Day of Happiness is about much more than indulging in delicious candies.

This is actually a day created by the United Nations. It introduced the idea in 2012, and the very first International Day of Happiness took place March 20, 2013.

So the day is somewhat new, but the idea that happiness is beneficial, to individuals and societies, is not new.

For example, the population of the Kingdom of Bhutan, in the Himalayan area of Asia, is thought to be one of the happiest in the world. These people consider the well-being of their fellow humans to be more important than income and material things. This idea has been their guiding principle since the 1970s.

In fact, the original initiative for the day came from Bhutan. They see how well it works for them, and they want the same for the rest of the world.

Goals for International Day of Happiness

The point of the day is to spread awareness that happiness is a basic goal for humans. And to encourage countries to design their public policies in a way to help improve everyone’s well being.

As then-UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his message for the 2014 International Day of Happiness: “Happiness is neither a frivolity nor a luxury. It is a deep-seated yearning shared by all members of the human family. It should be denied to no-one and available to all.”
