Yum! March 19 is National Chocolate Caramel Day.

Is there any combination better than the sweet, creamy, gooey blend of chocolate and caramel?

Well, maybe peanut butter and chocolate. But it’s probably a toss-up.

And anyway, this day is all about chocolate and caramel.

A day to indulge in chocolate-covered caramels. Ice cream with chocolate and caramel. Chocolate and caramel bars. Coffee with chocolate and caramel.

Oh, what a gloriously sweet day!

A Bite of Chocolate & Caramel Trivia

The first product Hershey’s ever made was a chocolate covered caramel. Yep, Milton Hershey started out working at a caramel company!

He discovered a German exhibit with equipment for making chocolate at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and bought it. Voila! He created a chocolate and caramel delight.

People have been caramelizing sugars since the 17th century. And making toffee since at least the 18th century.

But caramels didn’t exist until someone decided to add cream to the caramelized sugar. We’re not sure exactly when this happened, but Mrs. Lincoln’s Boston Cook Book, published in 1884, contains recipes for caramel flavored desserts.

We also don’t know who started this delicious day, but who cares? It’s the perfect excuse to eat anything with chocolate and caramel. And we’re behind that all the way.

Celebrating Chocolate Caramel Day

Enjoy the chocolate-caramel combo wherever you can find it.

You can even make your own chocolate caramels. It’s easier than you think. But you do need a candy thermometer to make sure you’re heating your sugar to the right temperature!

(And don’t worry about the directions for tempering chocolate. That’s about appearance, not taste. Your candies will taste great no matter what they look like).

Want to try some other recipes to get you through the day? These look interesting:

For a snack or dessert, consider one of these:

End your day with a Caramel Delight cocktail.

Maybe munch on some Chunky Caramel Popcorn with your cocktail.

If you want to cheat a little but still have something homemade, grab a box of Krusteaz Molten Deep Dish Chocolate Cookie w/Caramel Center Mix. They’re ridiculously simple to make. And sure to satisfy your need for chocolate and caramel.

How will you celebrate this deliciously sweet day?
