September 11 holds plenty of painful memories as the day terrorists attacked America, bringing down

  • The Twin Towers in New York,
  • Part of the Pentagon,
  • And a fourth plane that never reached its target through the heroism of its passengers.

Those who died that day and in the aftermath definitely deserve remembrance today.

That’s what Libraries Remember Day is all about. Commemorating the victims of the attack. Celebrating libraries’ role in preserving history and a free society.

The day was first proposed by Bill Erbes of the Bensenville Public Library in Illinois.

Ideas For Observing National Libraries Remember Day

Visit your local library and see if they have any events for the day.

For at least 10 years, the Bensenville Public Library stayed open for the full 24 hours of September 11 (from midnight to midnight). It was business as usual for those hours. And there were various activities in honor of the day as well. Mr. Erbes encouraged other libraries across the country to do the same.

We’re not sure how many libraries actually took him up on that challenge. Or how many are still participating any more.

Finding references to the day past about 2011 gets hard. But we do find sporadic mentions on the Bensenville Library’s Facebook page. It posted a photo of its commemorative service for the day in 2015. We didn’t find a reference for 2017 (maybe we missed it?). We did find mention of a tribute to those that lost their lives for 2018, but it did not specifically mention Libraries Remember Day.

Of course, it’s also possible other libraries are celebrating. Maybe just on a smaller scale.

If yours doesn’t have anything planned, suggest they do something for next year. Although there are a number of different commemoration days on this date (for example Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance), it would be nice if our record keepers, the libraries, participated too.

Does your library celebrate Libraries Remember Day?

If yes, what do you do to commemorate the day?

If not, why not?

  2. […] Libraries Remember Day: This remembrance of 9/11 began at the Bensenville Library in Illinois. The library held events for at least 10 years and invited other libraries across the country to do the same. It doesn’t seem to have done much in recent years, and of course there are other remembrance celebrations. But we’d like to see libraries get more involved again, since libraries are the one place where history is always available and remembered. […]
