Now we know our fellow pet lovers don’t really need another excuse to pamper their pets. But you have one anyway: National Pet Day.

No matter what kind of pet(s) you have, April 11 is their day.

Most of you probably have cats and/or dogs. After all there are up to 94 million cats and 90 million dogs living with their people in the U.S.

But many people have other pets, too. So don’t forget about your:

  • Bird
  • Turtle
  • Fish
  • Gerbil
  • Hamster
  • Snake

Or any other animal you love to love.

And never doubt that your pets love you too. Some more than others, but they all depend on you. And they all recognize that fact.

National Pet Day is another day created by pet lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige. Like several of her other pet-related days, the motto for today is “Don’t shop, Adopt!”

Ideas For Celebrating National Pet Day

Give your pets extra love and attention today.

Yes, if you’re anything like us it might be hard to outdo the nearly constant lovin’ your pets get. But try anyway!

Your dog would probably appreciate an extra walk or session of fetch.

If your cat’s the cuddly type, he’d probably like some extra cuddles. If not, then maybe some extra time chasing a string or other toy.

No doubt they’d all love an extra treat!

Get your pet a gift to celebrate. Maybe:

Don’t have a pet? Consider getting one, if it’ll fit into your lifestyle. Petfinder can help you find all kinds of different animals up for adoption at shelters near you. Use the dropdown list under “Type” to select small & furry; scales; fins & others; rabbit; or one of several other choices.

If you’re not ready for a pet of your own, but you’d still like to spend time with animals, volunteering at a local shelter is a great option. You’ll help socialize animals and show scared, abandoned animals the love and attention they crave.

No time? Donate to a local shelter or rescue organization. They’re always short on funds and supplies. If you don’t want to give money most list their needs (newspaper, towels, food, etc) on their website. Or just ask, they’ll be happy to tell you what they need most right now.

Communities or local organizations may hold pet day events, too. See if there are any near you. Your favorite pooch might win best-dressed or some other competition.

Find more ideas on the day’s official website.
