Celebration Ideas for April 5 – 11, 2021

Welcome to the weekend! It’s looking like it’ll be a nice, warm, sunny one here. We hope you have the same. And that you’ll get a chance to enjoy it.

Whatever you’ll be doing be sure to take a few minutes to plan next week’s celebrations. You won’t want to miss No Housework Day! Celebrate it with a beer. And/or coffee cake.

Of course that’s not nearly all you have to look forward to. So go ahead: Take a peek and plan your week. And as always, remember to …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All April Long

April is all about the animals. Mostly pets—adopting them & keeping them safe. But also frogs … some of which could also be pets.

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month: Sadly not everybody believes animals deserve humane treatment. Luckily many people do, and they dedicate themselves to making a difference for animals. Learn how you can help.

Pet First Aid Awareness Month: Do you know what to do if your pet gets seriously injured or suffers some other medical emergency? This is the month to make sure you’re prepared. Because while we all hope we never have to use such knowledge, it’s better to have it & not need it than the other way around.

Adopt a Ferret Month: If you’ve ever wanted to adopt a ferret, April is the month to do it! As long as you already know how to care for them & are ready for one (or more). Otherwise, take some time this month to learn about them & decide if you can handle a ferret as a pet. If not, you can still help ferrets in need of homes by volunteering, donating, or just spreading the word.

Adopt a Greyhound Month: There aren’t too many dog racing tracks left in the country, but they do still exist. Which means that each year some of the racing greyhounds retire. And when that happens they need new homes. That’s what this month is about. Making sure these dogs get good homes with people who understand their needs.

National Frog Month: Learn about frogs! They’re pretty fascinating (check out the 2nd fact—they “drink” water through their skin!). And sadly lots of species are in danger of extinction.

National Pet Month: April is all about the pets. All the pets! And responsible pet ownership. And raising funds for pet welfare organisations. Technically this is a UK celebration (the US celebrates in May), but we see no reason not to celebrate pets & the joy they bring us every chance we get.

Prevent Lyme in Dogs Month: As the weather warms up, so does the risk of Lyme Disease—for you and your pets. Learn more about Lyme in pets and the best ways to prevent it.

Weekly Celebrations for April 5 to 11

For this week we celebrate nature. It’s animals and the dark night skies that they need and we find so awe-inspiring.

We also celebrate libraries, which have resources where you can learn more about wildlife, light pollution, and so much more.

National Wildlife Week (April 5 – 9, 2021): Celebrate America’s amazing wildlife during this week. And every week of the year. Because when we protect animals and conserve their habitats we don’t just save the animals. We save ourselves, too. How amazing is that?!

International Dark Sky Week (April 5 – 12, 2021): One way to help protect wildlife (and our own health) is reducing light pollution. Limiting outdoor lights to only those strictly necessary also saves money! So it’s a win all around. Learn more for this week. And see if there are steps you can take to help.

National Library Week (April 4 – 10, 2021): Explore all your library has to offer this week. And beyond. Because well-funded, well-run libraries are cornerstones of their communities.

Celebration Days coming up for April 5 thru April 11

During this first full week of April we celebrate beer & pizza! But not on the same day … that seems wrong to us. How about you?

But then again, nothing says we can’t pair them up anyway. Which means we can have pizza & beer on 1 day and beer & pizza the other! 😁

Then we also get to skip the housework, draw birds, & go unicorn hunting. Plus much more.

So all in all it’s looking like another fun-tastic week.

April 5:

National Deep Dish Pizza Day: Deep dish pizza fans, this day’s for you! It’s basically a bread bowl filled with sauce & cheese & all your favorite toppings. And it can’t be beat! You know what you’re having for dinner, right?

Gold Star Spouses Day: Originally called Gold Star Wives Day, this day honors the surviving spouses and family members of military members killed in the line of duty. If you know any Gold Star families, reach out. If there are any memorial services near you, consider attending.

First Contact Day: On this date in 2063 humans meet Vulcans for the very first time. All Star Trek fans understand this historic moment is one to celebrate.

National Flash Drive Day: These handy little storage devices (also called USB drives, thumb drives, & jump drives) make data portability & sharing a breeze. Even if an internet connection (or mobile network) isn’t available! As long as you don’t lose the little bugger anyway …

National Caramel Day: Mmmm … Caramel. There’s not much that’s better at making almost anything taste better (other than maybe chocolate!). So get creative with caramel for the day. Drizzle (or generously pour) caramel sauce over your breakfast pancakes. Use more of that sauce as a dip for apple slices at lunch. Enjoy a snack of caramel popcorn (although we celebrate that on the 6th!). Make caramel cornbread to go with dinner. And caramel cookies for dessert! What’s your favorite way to use caramel?

National Raisin and Spice Bar Day: Somewhere amidst all that caramel you’re going to have to find room for raisin & spice bars. Make them yourself if you can. And maybe drizzle with some caramel sauce instead of icing?

April 6:

New Beer’s Eve: Celebrate the anniversary of the final day of Prohibition. Beer lovers across the country spent the evening lining up outside taverns & breweries, waiting for the stroke of midnight when beer sales would be legal again. Celebrate with your favorite beer. You don’t even have to wait until midnight.

SAAM Day of Action: On this day we take action to stop sexual harassment, assault, and abuse. Actions can include hosting or attending a SAAM event, spreading the word though your social channels, and more. We also wear teal to show support for survivors of sexual harassment and violence.

National Library Workers Day: For this day we celebrate all the library workers, without whom we couldn’t have functional libraries. And if your community still treats the library as an afterthought, advocate for more & better resources and a bigger budget (including for salaries). Because a library’s services really are invaluable.

National Tartan Day: Celebrate the anniversary of the Declaration of Arbroath, signed on this date in 1320, declaring Scotland’s independence from England. And celebrate the Scots’ contributions in forming the United States. Did you know 9 of the governors of our first 13 states were Scots?

National Twinkie Day: When was the last time you had a Twinkie? Well get out there & get some to enjoy for this day! Because how else can you celebrate appropriately?

National Caramel Popcorn Day: If you’ve planned ahead you have some caramel sauce left over from your Caramel Day celebrations to help make this celebration simple. If not, don’t worry. Either buy yourself some or try this recipe for caramel corn.

April 7:

No Housework Day: For this day all housework is banned! Enjoy your day instead. And do it guilt-free.

Girl, Me Too Day: This day reminds women that no matter their individual situations, they have more in common than not. And by supporting each other they can help create a better future.

National Walking Day: On this day we walk! Try to take a walk of at least 30 minutes at some point during the day. Do it alone with your thoughts or your favorite music. Or with friends or coworkers to help pass the time. And of course, if you have a dog you have an always-willing walking partner!

National Beer Day: After New Beer’s Eve comes—what else?!—Beer Day. Celebrate with your favorite beer.

National Coffee Cake Day: If you start your day with a cup of coffee, add a generous slice of coffee cake and you’ll have this celebration sorted! And if you’re not a coffee drinker, well have your coffee cake with whatever morning beverage you prefer. Or enjoy coffee cake during a break or even after dinner. The time and beverage don’t really matter. It’s the cake that’s important!

April 8:

National Dog Fighting Awareness Day: Dog fighting exists and it’s a cruel “sport”. The ASPCA created this day to raise awareness of this fact and encourage us to report any dog fighting rings we learn of. Because they’re not rare. And they exist everywhere.

National Alcohol Screening Day: It’s been a stressful year. Have you been drinking more to deal with it? Why not take a few minutes to assess your drinking & make sure it hasn’t become a problem?

Draw a Bird Day: Artistic ability doesn’t matter for this day. Just draw a bird! And share it if you’d like. Maybe even on the Draw a Bird Day FB page?

Trading Cards for Grownups Day: Tom & Ruth Roy clearly believe the kids shouldn’t be the only ones allowed to have fun with trading cards! So they created this day and encourage anyone of any age to enjoy their trading cards.

National Zoo Lovers Day: Head out to the zoo to visit & learn about the animals! Do check with the zoo first, though. Some are still requiring reservations to avoid crowding. And if you can’t get there in person, check out your virtual options. Many zoos have vastly expanded & improved their virtual programs over this past year.

National Empanada Day: Empanadas are basically little hand pies that you can fill with whatever you’d like! This guide to empanadas explains them & links to different dough & filling recipes. So make empanadas for every meal if you’d like. Get creative!

April 9:

National Unicorn Day: This day apparently started in Scotland. But people all over the world love the majestic and magical unicorn! So if you’re one of them, celebrate unicorns in all their glory for this day.

National Name Yourself Day: For this day you get to decide what name you’d prefer to be called. If there’s a name you alway felt suited you more than the one you have, try it out for the day. Or use your favorite name (whether or not it suits you). For this day your name is all up to you! (Unless you’re signing legal documents … that could cause problems!)

National Cherish an Antique Day: Take some time on this day to learn the story behind an antique that’s been in your family for years. Then document the story for future generations. Or take a more lighthearted view of the day & cherish the “antique” people in your life. Ask them to tell you stories of when they were young.

National Dive Bar Day: If your favorite dive bar has survived the past year & has been allowed to reopen, go help it recover if you can.

National Chinese Almond Cookie Day: Clearly this is the day to enjoy Chinese almond cookies. Homemade Chinese almond cookies if you can manage it. And you can, because they’re simple. And you can even make the dough ahead of time & refrigerate or freeze it.

April 10:

Safety Pin Day: For this day we pin everything in sight! Or maybe just learn a bit about the history of this simple but useful little gadget.

Slow Art Day: On this day we slow down and appreciate just one or a select few pieces of art. Really see them and understand them. See if there’s an official event near you. If not, you can still appreciate art slowly on your own. Or with a few friends or family members.

National Encourage a Young Writer Day: If you know any young people who love to write—or even just want to write—offer encouragement. If you write yourself, offer to read something they’ve written & give your thoughts. Give the gift of a journal to write in (yes, by hand!) and encourage experimenting with different writing styles. Whatever ways you can think of to offer encouragement, do it!

National Siblings Day: Let your siblings know how much they mean to you for this day. Do it in person if you can. If you can’t meet up, a phone call or video chat is still meaningful.

National Farm Animals Day: This day is all about the humane treatment of animals on the farm. Whether they provide us with meat, eggs, or milk, or they help us in some other way, livestock deserve to be treated with care and compassion. Just like any living creature. It also raises awareness of the need to find new homes for abused & neglected farm animals.

National Cinnamon Crescent Day: Mmmm … start your day with the deliciousness of cinnamon crescent rolls. End the day the same way. And have at least one in the middle of the day, too! They’re that good. 😋 And if you want to enjoy them homemade, try this recipe. If you’d rather not mess with making the dough yourself, this recipe dresses up regular refrigerated crescent roll dough.

April 11:

National Pet Day: Give your pets all the extra love, attention, treats, toys, etc they desire for the day. It is, after all, their day.

Submarine Day: It’s the 2nd Submarine Day of the year! This one marks the anniversary of the US Submarine Force and the country’s purchase of the submarine Holland VI.

National Poutine Day: Yes, we just celebrated the US version of this day on March 5. Now we celebrate with the Canadians, the people who really know poutine. So we consider this celebration more authentic. Make sure you eat authentic poutine to celebrate!

National Eight Track Tape Day: Do you remember 8-track tapes? Do you even know what these things are? If you not only remember them but have some (along with a working player), listen to them to celebrate this day! If this day confuses you, learn about these early versions of portable music.

International Louie Louie Day: If you happen to have any eight tracks of Louie Louie you can have 2 celebrations at once! And if not, you can find recordings of Louie Louie absolutely everywhere. Listen to a few to celebrate Richard Berry’s birthday.

National Ranch Water Day: What the heck is ranch water and why would we celebrate it?! Apparently this mix of tequila, lime, and soda water is the “Unofficial Cocktail of West Texas.” Well, that explains a lot. But it also sounds delicious. And it apparently comes in a can too! So if you can find some RancH2O Ranch Water, pop open a can. (RancH20 started the day) If not, it’s pretty simple to whip up some Ranch Water at home.

National Cheese Fondue Day: Have a fun, casual dinner with cheese fondue. Pretty much everything tastes better covered with melty cheese anyway! Try this classic fondue recipe, with 3 yummy cheeses. Don’t have a fondue pot? Don’t worry! You’re making it on the stove anyway, so just keep that pot hot (a hotplate would work, or a raised trivet with tealights under it) & enjoy. Enjoy some Ranch Water with your fondue if you’d like.
