Celebrations Ideas for April 9 – 15, 2018

If April showers bring May flowers, what on earth does April snow bring?!

Yes, yes, it sometimes snows in April. But the amounts in some spots is definitely unusual! So let’s all take a moment to wish the April snow victims well as they dig themselves out. Unless you’re one of the snow victims, in which case stay safe and stay warm.

No matter where you live, there’s sure to be something in this week’s celebrations to keep you warm (grilled cheese, anyone?) and happy (free ice cream!).

So take a look, plan your celebrations, and most of all …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All April Long

As April chugs along we work at keeping America beautiful and our cars humming beautifully. And our reward is fresh tomatoes and grilled cheese sandwiches.

A delicious and delightful way to spend the month!

Fresh Florida Tomatoes Month: For many of us April is too early for growing tomatoes. But we can celebrate anyway, with Florida tomatoes! Find tons of recipes for fresh tomatoes here.

Keep America Beautiful Month: It’s up to each and every one of us to keep our little corner of our country beautiful. And together we can keep America beautiful. Not just during April, but all year long!

National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Month: Mmmm … gooey cheese oozing from between golden brown, crispy bread slices. Does it get any better? Only if you serve it with tomato soup! (And bacon … shhhh … bacon makes everything better ;) ) Find some grilled cheese recipes here.

National Car Care Month: Now that Spring is here, it’s time to make sure winter didn’t do any damage to your car. Or take care of any issues you were putting off during the winter. That way you’ll be ready for summer road trips!

Weekly Celebrations For April’s 2nd Week

This week we celebrate the library and being kind to animals. We also learn a bit about head & neck cancer and how to avoid dog bites (being kind to them is a good start!).

National Library Week (April 8 – 14): Celebrate the library and the contributions libraries make to their communities. Of course this includes the library workers (they get their own day on Tuesday, April 10). And also bookmobiles, which bring the library to you. Bookmobiles also get a day within the week, on Wednesday, April 11.

National Dog Bite Prevention Week (April 8 – 14): Learn how to prevent dog bites. Often an animal will try to tell you it’s feeling scared or uncomfortable before it bites. If you recognize the signs, you can avoid getting bitten.

Animal Cruelty / Human Violence Awareness Week (April 15 – 21): This week starts on Sunday the 15th and runs through the following week. It raises awareness of the connection between animal abuse and violence toward humans.

Oral, Head, and Neck Cancer Awareness Week (April 8 – 15): Have you been screened for oral, head, and neck cancer? It’s more common than you might think. And if you use alcohol or tobacco you’re at a higher risk for it.

Celebration Days Coming Up For April 9 thru April 15

Can you believe that when this week ends April will be half over? All the more reason to find ways to celebrate each day!

We’re a bit skeptical about celebrating a severed ear, but it’s certainly an option.

We can, however, get behind ice cream, pets, and reading. Also dolphins, licorice, and gardening.

There’s plenty more to celebrate, too. So take a look and make a plan for a funtastic week.

April 9:

Appomattox Day: Observe the anniversary of the end of the Civil War today. On April 9, 1865 General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.

Jenkins’ Ear Day: On this day in 1731 a crew of Spanish coast guards stopped and boarded Captain Robert Jenkins’ ship. They pillaged the ship and cut off Jenkins’ ear. This incident eventually led to the War of Jenkins’ Ear in October 1739.

National Cherish an Antique Day: Today is the day to celebrate family heirlooms or other antiques that hearken back to an era when things were made to last and to be passed down. No, it doesn’t refer to your older relatives who may be more likely to actually own some of those heirlooms. Although you should cherish them as well, and if they have a sense of humor …

April 10:

Safety Pin Day: You probably don’t think about safety pins much, even while using one. But they’re actually quite the useful invention. And today we celebrate the anniversary of the safety pin’s patent.

Free Cone Day: As in ice cream cone! And Ben & Jerry’s at that. Yum! And yes, like the name says, you get a free ice cream cone. See if there’s a participating shop near you!

National Siblings Day: Celebrate the unique bond you have with your brothers and sisters today.

National Library Workers Day: It’s the workers who make the libraries the amazing places they are. So during National Libraries Week the workers get a day of recognition.

April 11:

National Pet Day: Celebrate all the pets today! Doesn’t matter what kind of pet(s) you have. Give them all extra cuddles, treats, toys, or whatever you pet prefers. Don’t have a pet? Consider adopting one. Or volunteering to help homeless pets feel a little less alone at a local shelter.

International Louie Louie Day: Yes, the song. The “best party song of all time.” We celebrate the song on the birthday of the man who wrote and first recorded it, Richard Berry.

Submarine Day: Today we celebrate the year’s 2nd Submarine Day. This one is the anniversary of the day the US government bought John Phillip Holland’s invention (the submarine Holland VI) and established the U.S. Submarine Force.

April 12:

Drop Everything and Read Day: Celebrate Beverly Cleary’s birthday by doing like the day’s name says: Drop everything and dive headlong into a book (or any reading material you like).

National Licorice Day: If you love licorice, you’ll adore this delicious day! If you happen to be near Lincoln, NE, visit the Licorice International facility for free samples. For the rest of us, just enjoy your favorite licorice today!

Walk on Your Wild Side Day: Is there something you wouldn’t normally do? Go do that today! It doesn’t have to be truly wild or crazy, just wild compared to your normal activities. Or not even wild, simply unusual for you … something that would make people who know you stop and wonder.

April 13:

National Scrabble Day: Celebrate Alfred M. Butts’ birthday today with a game or two of Scrabble. Why? Because he invented the game, of course!

Blame Someone Else Day: Yes, yes, there are people who seem to celebrate this day every day of their lives. But for the rest of us, we get to point the finger at everyone and everything other than ourselves for a whole 24 hours. Always on the 1st Friday the 13th of the year.

National Donate Life Blue & Green Day: Today we promote organ donation and donor registration. Wear blue & green, learn more about organ donation, and talk to others about it. If you’re not already a registered organ donor, consider doing that today!

April 14:

National Dolphin Day: Who doesn’t love dolphins?! They’re adorable and fascinating. Sadly many species are also in danger of extinction. Learn more about these amazingly social animals today.

National Gardening Day: Get your gardening started! Even if it’s just heading out to yoru local garden center for some planning. Or having a seed swap with other gardening lovers in your neighborhood.

Pathologists’ Assistant Day: If you are or know a pathologist’s assistant, this day is for you. If you are one, toot your own horn. You deserve it! If you know any PAs, thank them for their dedication to protecting patients’ health.

April 15:

Rubber Eraser Day: Tax filers in the U.S. get an extra 2 days to file this year … leaving plenty of time to celebrate the rubber eraser on April 15! Let’s get that eraser party started!

Take a Wild Guess Day: Can you guess how to celebrate this day? If you can, then you’re doing it right! … Although that particular guess probably isn’t all that wild. But we’ll give it to you anyway!

World Art Day: Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday is the day to spread “art awareness” around the globe. Consider visiting an art gallery or museum and immersing yourself in the experience.
