Sweet, juicy raspberries make any cake better, and July 19 is the day to celebrate that delightful combination: Raspberry Cake Day.

Or maybe it’s on July 31, as some sources claim. But we’ll be celebrating on July 19.

There’s nothing stopping you from celebrating on both days though. After all, raspberries are delicious any day of the year.

Besides, as far as we can tell nobody knows who started this day, when or why. So there’s nobody to tell you you’re celebrating wrong.

Some sources suggest raspberry growers started the day to promote the use of their product. But there’s no supporting evidence that we could find. And if this version of the who and why is correct … Well, two celebrations will certainly use more raspberries than one, so the growers are unlikely to complain!

A Taste of Raspberry Trivia

Did you know?

  • Despite their name, raspberries aren’t true berries. They’re fruit. Actually aggregate fruit, meaning they’re made up of a bunch of smaller fruits (each bump on a raspberry is actually a tiny stone fruit).
  • Raspberries come in more colors than red. You can find yellow, dark purple and black raspberries.
  • Summer-bearing raspberries produce fruit throughout the summer.
  • Ever-bearing don’t actually produce fruit constantly, as the name suggests. Instead you get one crop of berries from the tops of the canes in the fall. The following spring berries appear on the lower part of the canes.
  • Raspberries are good sources of fiber, manganese, vitamin C and vitamin K.
  • Raspberries also contain flavonoids (specifically quercetin and gallic acid), which can help protect against cardiovascular disease.
  • Ketones in raspberries may slow the growth of cancer cells.

So much goodness in each sweet little berry. Oh, excuse me, fruit!

Ideas For Celebrating Raspberry Cake Day

Make a raspberry cake. Use your favorite recipe or try one of these:

For recipes using fresh raspberries, use your home-grown raspberries if you have enough.

Don’t have a raspberry plant? See if there’s a “pick your own” farm nearby and go harvest some.

Or have fresh raspberries delivered right to you (obviously you’ll pay a premium if you do this). You can even get freeze dried raspberries, if you prefer. Some recipes also use raspberry jam.

Then consider growing your own raspberries so you’ll have fresh raspberries to harvest next year. Or the following year, since it can take a couple of years for a new plant to start producing fruit.

You can start your raspberries from seeds. Or make getting started easier with raspberry starter plants.

No time to bake? Buy a raspberry cake instead.

Invite friends over to share your raspberry cake.

And finally, even if you’re on a diet, eat as much raspberry cake as you want to for this day. It’s only one day; it’s delicious; and raspberries are low fat, low calorie, and good for you! You can go back to being “good” tomorrow. (Obviously this doesn’t apply if you have a medical reason to avoid raspberries or cake!).
