Nachos! They’re a favorite game-day (or any day) snack. Loaded nachos, complete with meat and/or beans plus tons of toppings can even be a whole meal.

And on November 6 we celebrate nachos any way you like them, with National Nachos Day.

Yep. You really do have an excuse to have nachos all day for this one day. So take full advantage!

We don’t know who created this day or when, but it must have been someone who couldn’t get enough nachos.

A Morsel of Nacho Trivia

Although we haven’t found proof, the story goes that a man named Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya created the first ever Nachos Especiales (Nacho’s Special Dish).

Anaya was the maitre d’ at a restaurant in the Mexican border town of Piedra Negras. One day in 1943 hungry guests showed up, but the restaurant was closed and the chef had left. So Anaya cut some tortillas into triangles, topped them with cheese and jalepenos and served them to his guests. Voila … Nachos!

Today there’s a bronze plaque in Piedra Negras honoring this inventive man.

In the 1970s Frank Liberto started selling “ball park nachos” at Arlington Stadium. He used prepared tortilla chips and a pourable cheese product he had created, so he didn’t need heat to melt the cheese. Howard Cosell talked about them on air, and nachos soon became the sensation they are today.

On a side note: That liquid “cheese” doesn’t meet FDA standards to be called real cheese. That’s why it’s a “cheese product.”.

Ideas For Celebrating National Nachos Day

Eat nachos.

Make them yourself or head out to your favorite Mexican restaurant.

The simplest way to make them is to simply top tortillas with shredded cheese and whatever other toppings you like:

  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Onion
  • Jalepeno
  • Bacon
  • Guacamole
  • Sour cream
  • Anything else your heart and taste buds desire

Bake them to melt the cheese and enjoy.

If you’re someone who prefers following a recipe, try one of these:

  • Breakfast Nachos: We told you this was an excuse to eat nachos all day. Since the day starts with breakfast, that’s where your nachos journey should start. So top your chips with eggs, sausage and roasted peppers.
  • Cheesy Macho Nachos: These nachos are a whole meal.
  • Seafood Nachos: This could also be a meal if you wanted it to be. Or a hearty appetizer.
  • Spicy Nachos with Fresh Pico De Gallo: Chips topped with chili, pico de gallo and other goodies.
  • Black and White Nachos: Two different beans and lots of seasonings on “homemade chips” (cut up corn tortillas and bake).

And to relax after a long day of enjoying nachos, sit back and relax with a Nacho Cocktail! Yes, you read that right. A nacho cocktail. Really it’s a Bloody Mary with queso and crumbled tortilla chips in place of salt around the rim of the glass.

Don’t forget to spread the word about the day! Tag your posts with #NationalNachosDay.
