August 10 is another yummy food holiday: National S’mores Day!

Who doesn’t love s’mores?

Okay, we’re sure somebody probably doesn’t, but why? It’s three simple but delicious ingredients: sweet, crunchy graham crackers; gooey, melty toasted marshmallows; and chocolate, the food of the gods (yes, chocolate is the food of the gods).

Put them all together and you have a truly decadent creation.

We’re not sure who first created National S’mores Day or when. But the day is sponsored by the National Confectioners Association.

S’mores History and Trivia

Who created s’mores? An entrepreneur named Alec Barnum gets the credit for introducing the world to this sweet delight. But we’re not sure there’s actually any proof that he did.

And he apparently never wrote it down, either. The Girl Scouts did that, first describing them in reports in 1925. They included a s’mores recipe in the booklet Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts in 1927.

They were apparently originally called “Some Mores.” Nobody seems to be sure when it got shortened to s’mores.

The world’s largest s’more (as 0f 2013, anyway) weighed 267 pounds. It was created by a group of campers at Deer Run Campground in Pennsylvania, using 300 bags of marshmallows, 90 pounds of chocolate, and two really big graham crackers weighing 90 pounds total.

Ideas For Celebrating National S’mores Day

Clearly you are going to have to make s’mores for the day. And if you can make them while camping, well that would be just perfect.

But even if you can’t go camping, you can make s’mores. Marshmallows can be toasted in the oven or over a gas burner on the stove.

You can also build your s’more with a non-toasted marshmallow and then microwave it. Or wrap it in foil and throw it on the grill!

Make them the traditional way, with graham crackers, marshmallows and a plain chocolate bar, like Hershey’s. You can even get a Hershey’s S’mores Kit … What could be simpler?!

Or get creative. Change up the chocolate bar: use peanut butter cups, dark chocolate, or chocolate with nuts. Replace the toasted marshmallow with marshmallow cream. Use a combination of cinnamon graham crackers and honey graham crackers.

Maybe make Raspberry S’mores.

Or make s’mores inspired desserts/snacks:
