Celebration Ideas for August 6 – 12, 2018

Yikes! We’re almost a full week into August. When did that happen?!

Oh well, we’re not going to dwell on that. Instead we’ll just make the most of every single day. And we hope you’ll do the same.

So we bring you once again some ideas to help you do just that. As usual we’ve tried to include a mix of serious, fun, delicious, and even just plain silly days.

And with that it is time again to take a peek & plan your week. As always remember to …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All August Long

For August we celebrate happiness. Yes, a whole month of happiness … can you handle it? And also yummy catfish & rye.

Well good foods certainly make us happy, so we’re all in on these celebrations!

Happiness Happens Month: Yes, it really does. And it helps when we actually try to make it happen. Each year the Secret Society of Happy People picks a theme for the month. This year it’s Be the Reason Someone Smiles. Sounds like a great goal.

National Catfish Month: Celebrate the catfish farmers this month. Oh, and eat lots of what they farm … that’s catfish, in case you weren’t paying attention! Grilled, baked, made into burgers or gumbo. Find these and dozens of other ways to prepare catfish here.

Rye Month: For August we celebrate the grain that will grow under almost any conditions and can actually help control both blood sugar and hunger. Did you know humans once considered it a weed?

Weekly Celebrations for August’s 1st Full Week

Doing good and scoring bargains & fresh, local produce. Sounds like a fantastic week. So get to it!

Feeding Pets of the Homeless/Give a Dog a Bone Week (August 5 – 11): This charity drive starts on Sunday, August 5 this year. Let’s get the word out about the 9th annual drive to collect food & supplies to help homeless people’s pets stay healthy & happy.

Assistance Dog Week (August 5 – 11): Celebrate assistance dogs & their trainers this week. They give people with certain disabilities and/or illnesses the chance to live normal, independent lives. Definitely something worth celebrating.

National Bargain Hunting Week (August 6 – 12): Experience the thrill of the bargain hunt all week … and beyond, if you wish! This celebration began back in 1996 … clearly bargain hunting never goes out of style! And fittingly, we have National Garage Sale Day at the end of the week … always a fun place to go bargain hunting.

National Farmer’s Market Week (August 5 – 11): Do you have a Farmer’s Market nearby? Do you go regularly? Well, this is the week to check it out if you haven’t been going! And if you have, well don’t skip this week. Your market may be having special events to celebrate.

Celebration Days coming up for Aug. 6 thru Aug. 12

This week we celebrate cats & a dog & oddly lovable evilness all on the same day (Aug. 8). We also give assistance dogs, big cats, & elephants their days.

Other celebrations include an 80s pop band, lighthouses, and playing in the sand.

Of course we haven’t forgotten to include some deliciousness. Indulge in rice pudding, root beer floats, and s’mores this week.

Choose from these & more to help you have another fun-tastic week!

August 6:

Assistance Dog Day: Learn about the different ways dogs can assist their humans. From keeping them safe to helping with everyday tasks or letting them know the phone’s ringing or someone’s knocking at the door.

National Root Beer Float Day: Mmmmm … sweet & creamy & root beery! It’s the perfect treat for a hot August day. Or any hot day. Ok, any day. But especially good on August 6, ‘cause that’s the day to celebrate it. And you can get one free if there’s an A&W near you …

National Fresh Breath Day: We hope every day is fresh breath day for you! But this day is a reminder to keep your mouth healthy & your breath smelling sweet (or at least not foul). Prevent most cases of bad breath by brushing, flossing, and drinking water.

August 7:

National Night Out: This annual event brings together police departments and the community to promote safety and partnerships. If your community is participating, get out there and meet your neighbors & local police officers.

National Lighthouse Day: Celebrate the lighthouse, those symbols of safety and security, guiding ships to safe harbor and away from danger. Tour one if you can! Or just learn a bit more about them.

Particularly Preposterous Packaging Day: Have you ever had product packaging defeat all your efforts to open it? Be honest! Well that’s what this day is all about. Not sure how to celebrate … maybe share stories of the most defiant packaging you’ve ever come across?

August 8:

Odie Day: Celebrate Odie’s birthday! Garfield’s pal is a bit goofy, but you know you love him. Even Garfield loves him (even if he’ll never admit it)! Apparently Jim Davis, Odie’s creator, has mostly ignored the pup’s birthday, so we must celebrate extra hard. ;)

Dalek Day: Honor the birth of the Dalek’s creator, Terry Nation. He passed away in 2013, but he lives on in his oddly beloved evil creation. This is diferent from International Dalek Remembrance Day in December, which is all about the creation, not the creator.

International Cat Day: Celebrate the feline today! Give your favorite feline extra cuddles, treats, & head bumps today. And don’t let them hunt birds & other wildlife … apparently this upsets the neighbors. This day is different from National Cat Day, which is in October.

August 9:

Book Lovers Day: Indulge in your love of books today. Busy lives can often get in the way of settling in with a good book. But not on Book Lovers Day! Browse a book store (new or used), wander your local library, or pick up something from your to-read pile. Then shut out the world and read!

National Veep Day: This day recognizes the presidential succession, as laid out in the US Constitution. We celebrate it on the anniversary of the day President Richard Nixon resigned and Vice President (Veep) Gerald Ford rose to the presidency, August 9, 1974.

National Rice Pudding Day: Make and eat rice pudding! Don’t have a rice pudding recipe? Find some here!

August 10:

National S’mores Day: Mmmm … sweet, sticky, chocolaty s’mores. Go ahead & make some in honor of this delicious day. No campfire for toasting marshmallows? Don’t let that stop you. Toast ‘em in the oven or over a gas stove burner. Done!

Duran Duran Appreciation Day: Yes, really. Now maybe you don’t appreciate Duran Duran. But if you do, make the most of this day!

World Lion Day: Another day to celebrate the kitties! Really big kitties in this case. They probably won’t want cuddles, but appreciate them from afar for this day. And help raise awareness of the need for conservation.

August 11:

Play in the Sand Day: Do as the day’s name says and get down & dirty in the sand. Make sandcastles or sand sculptures, dig holes (refill them before leaving if you do it on the beach), bury friends up to their necks (dig them back out too ;) ). How you play is up to you. Just play!

National Presidential Joke Day: No, despite what you may be thinking this is actually about our presidents’ senses of humor. And apparently many of them have been quite funny (at least in their own minds!).

National Garage Sale Day: Clear out your basement, garage, and other storage areas to celebrate the day. Or head out to the sales & score some awesome bargains. Your choice. Here are some great tips for shoppers.

August 12:

World Elephant Day: Help spread the word about the dangers elephants face. And find out how you can help them survive. Elephants are fascinating animals worthy of our help.

Vinyl Record Day: Celebrate the anniversary of Edison’s invention of the phonograph back in 1877. Shortly after the 1st celebration in 2002 a nonprofit company, also called Vinyl Record Day, was born. It is dedicated to “the preservation of the cultural influence, the recordings and the cover art of the vinyl record.” What an awesome mission!

IBM PC Day: It’s another anniversary to celebrate. This time it’s the IBM personal computer, introduced to the public on August 12, 1981. IBM didn’t invent the personal computer, but it made the first one the general public would embrace.
