It’s Happy Mew Year For Cats!

Yep, thanks to Thomas and Ruth Roy, cats have their very own new year’s celebration day. Or as the official Mew Year webpage says, it’s a day for cats “to celebrate the ‘mewness’ of a new time.”

And why shouldn’t cats have their very own day to start fresh? They make up quite a large population in the U.S. According to the Humane Society, in 2012 there were 95.6 million owned cats (or more accurately, cats with resident humans waiting on them paw and tail!)

24 percent of households with cats had three or more! (That’s compared to 83.3 million dogs and only 10 percent of owners having three or more pooches.) Clearly cats rule!

Why Celebrate?

Because … cats! Duh :) If you need more reason than that, well, you’re probably not the target audience for this holiday. That’s okay. There are plenty of other holidays you can celebrate on Jan. 2.

You’re welcome :)

How to Celebrate Happy Mew Year For Cats

Individuals

Now obviously, you’ll want to celebrate with your cat. Maybe get him some catnip. Or a new toy filled with catnip.

Over at Wellcats, you can find both in the Cats & Company section.

Don’t have a cat but want one? Get one! Preferably from a shelter or rescue organization. Many of those sweeties have had a rough life, but you’ll find a great variety of personalities, ranging from stereotypically aloof kitties to lovebugs that just want to cuddle all day.

Seriously, what better way to celebrate a new start than to give a homeless cat a fresh new chance in a loving home?

Visit a local shelter or rescue, or try Petfinder to see pictures of kitties near you.

Love cats but can’t have one? Donate money, time or supplies to a local shelter to help save more lives.

If you have a pet-related business, promotion is a no-brainer. Promote cat products! Offer discounts. Collect your most popular cat toys and treats in a display (remember, things that cats like! Not so much medications, nail clippers and such). Create a special Mew Year page for your website, also with toys & treats.

Shelters and rescues can promote the day as the perfect day to give a cat a “mew” start at a happy life. Maybe discount the adoption fee or include a starter kit with the adoption—stock it with a few cans of food, enough litter for a week and pooper scooper, for example.

Use your imagination! Just remember to get permission.
