Celebrate Z Day on January 1

Z Day - January 1

Z Day is January 1

What the heck is Z Day? It’s listed on a lot of holiday/celebration lists. But there’s rarely any explanation!

And research turns up a lot of information about Zeitgeist Day in mid-March. Not quite what we’re looking for.

But never fear. Here at NonStop Celebrations, we’ve discovered it’s a day all for people who’s names start with Z! And places, too.

How many people is that? Well, more than you might think. There’s a lot of names starting with Z, although there are only a few people with many of those names. The data’s a bit old, but for an idea, check out this page listing Z names in the 2000 U.S. census.

Just the same, since so many things get done alphabetically—and always starting at the front of the alphabet—these poor people are last for just about everything!

So for just one day, they get to be first.

Of course, this isn’t any kind of official holiday, so it’s up to you, dear readers, to enforce this “rule” for January 1.

Now, some websites mention a zombie attack on Z Day. But we much prefer the letter explanation. Especially since that’s easy to plan for each year. How on earth can we be sure zombies are going to attack every January 1? And would we really want to celebrate that anyway? Not to mention, how many non-zombies would be left the following Jan 1 to celebrate?

So anyway, scroll down for a few ideas for celebrating this (very unofficial) holiday.

How to Celebrate Z Day

Individuals and companies can get creative with this rather whimsical day.

Individuals

Know anybody with a “Z” name? Tell them today’s their day. Maybe even treat them to lunch or dinner.

In a situation where something’s being done alphabetically, starting with “A”? Speak up, and let everyone know today’s the day to start with the “Z”s. You’ll be a hero! (Well, except to those “poor” people with “A” names who thought they’d get out of there fast …)

Go to the zoo. Each some zucchini. Pair it with a nice zinfandel …

You get the idea!

Companies

Sell anything that starts with “Z”? Promote it. Put it on sale. Offer it up as a package deal with a related product. Get creative!

If you have a physical store, gather together items that start with “Z” and make a display. On a website, create a special page with “Z” items.

Give people whose last name starts with a “Z” a special discount.

And for a bit of trivia, instead of “Z” named people and places, there’s a “Z” event you can celebrate if you support the goals of the Zapatista Rebellion (or Chiapas Rebellion) in Mexico. It started on January 1, 1994 and is now a holiday in that country! (And, although it should go without saying, just make sure you’re celebrating respectfully).

  2. […] Z Day: Also on January 1, celebrate people and places whose names start with Z! Do you know anyone or anyplace like that? […]

  3. […] Z Day: On this day people whose names start with “Z” get top billing! No more being at the end of the alphabetical line. No, on Jan. 1 “alphabetical” starts with Z! And their friends should treat them to a meal, too. And heck, why not just celebrate the letter Z in all things. Like eating & drinking things that start with “Z”? (But not necessarily only those things … that might leave you pretty hungry). […]

  4. […] Z Day: Celebrate anyone you know whose name starts with Z! Maybe even yourself? Places too if you’d like. Even animals & other things. Have fun with it! […]

  5. […] Z Day: For this day we put people whose names start with “Z” first. Celebrate them. Let them go ahead of you in line. Buy them a coffee. Or a meal. Eat & drink only things that start with Z too (ok, maybe not only). And visit the zoo to see some zebras (yes, even if you did that earlier in the week)! Basically, have fun with it. […]
