So the holidays, with their abundance of sweet treats, are over. The days are long and cold. How to brighten your mood? Bite into the sweet, gooey goodness of a chocolate covered cherry for an instant pick-me up.

It is, after all, National Chocolate Covered Cherries Day!

Chocolate covered cherries are indulgent bites of chocolate (usually milk chocolate) hiding a maraschino cherry. They usually have a semi-liquid, sugary center too. Sometimes the center includes liqueur.

Cella’s Confections introduced the American public to chocolate covered cherries, and many people still swear they’re the best. Tootsie bought Cella’s in 1985, but the delightful treats still feature their unique 100% liquid center.

As far as we can tell, the company didn’t start this day, and it’s not clear who did. But this sweet mix of cherries and chocolates definitely deserves its own day.

Celebration Ideas

 Individuals: Indulge

Eat chocolate covered cherries, of course!

Buy your favorites. Many companies make different versions, even some in dark chocolate for people who prefer that.

Or if you’re feeling creative, make your own. Here’s a few recipes we’ve found:

For a somewhat different take, try these Chocolate-Covered Cherry Cookies.

Maybe you’d like to host a chocolate covered cherry themed party. Guests can bring their favorites. Or you can collect a few recipes and make enough for everyone to go home with a selection of treats.

Of course, most recipes recommend waiting a week or more before serving, so you won’t get to enjoy your creations at the party. You might want to have some already-prepared treats available to eat while you’re creating.

Companies

If you sell chocolate covered cherries, create a display or special webpage of the different varieties.

Invite employees to bring in their favorite (store-bought or homemade) versions to share. You might need to be careful with this idea, as employees with dietary restrictions may not be able to participate. Consider including a variety of treats, some healthful (like cherries!), to ensure everyone can enjoy something.
