Happy 4th of July! We hope your long weekend is fun. Or was fun, depending on when you read this. 🥳

But don’t let that be the end of your summer fun. There’s plenty more days of summer to enjoy! In fact, that’s what Anti-Boredom Month is all about. So definitely celebrate that one!

And of course, our lists of upcoming celebrations can help with that too. Just jump right in to take a peek and plan your week.

And remember the best way to avoid boredom is to …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All July Long

All during July we avoid boredom by getting creative with making wheelchairs beautiful, painting with watercolor, and avoiding single-use plastics.

Plastic Free July: For the entire month of July we avoid single-use plastics as much as possible. Entirely if possible! (This year that may not be possible in places that have temporarily banned reusable bags in stores due to the pandemic). Then, once we’ve seen how easy it is to avoid these plastics—and how much better reusable options work—we can continue this month for the whole year. And even our whole lives!

National Anti-Boredom Month: July is all about combating boredom! Because after Independence Day there’s not much to look forward to on the calendar until … back to school?! But that’s no excuse for boredom. And in fact, you’re in the right place to find ways to avoid boredom every day of the year. Just find the unofficial (or even official) days, weeks, & months that interest you. Then celebrate them!

National Wheelchair Beautification Month: Why not use some of your anti-boredom time to help someone? Wheelchairs are pretty boring & utilitarian. Help make someone’s wheelchair into a unique expression of who that person is. And if you use a wheelchair & haven’t yet personalized it, now’s the time to do that!

World Watercolor Month: Whether you’re a great painter or a terrible one, for the month of July get out the watercolors and paint! Then share what you’ve created with the world. And help raise awareness of the importance of art education and art supplies for children in need. As a bonus, this is also a great way to avoid boredom!

Weekly Celebrations for July 6 to 12

This week is all about improving our sense of well-being & mental health.

Creative Maladjustment Week (July 7 – 14, 2020): Creative maladjustment seems to have hit the mainstream, although most people probably aren’t calling it that. But just the same, a lot of people are feeling maladjusted with the state of the world these days. And many are trying to come up with new & different ways to begin creating a better world. Seems like they’ve gotten a head start on celebrating this week.

Nude Recreation Week (July 6 – 12, 2020): This week goes well with Creative Maladjustment Week. Because while it may not be a huge societal problem, plenty of people feel maladjusted to wearing clothes! And have for quite a long time. Thus we have nude beaches and entire weeks devoted to going au naturale. Along with things like World Naked Gardening Day (did you celebrate in May?). Why not try it?

National Therapeutic Recreation Week (July 5 – 11, 2020): Learn more about how recreation can help improve mental health. Not just any recreation, though. Therapeutic recreation uses sports, arts, gardening, and other activities—adapted by trained professionals—as therapy for those with mental and emotional disabilities.

Celebration Days coming up for July 6 thru July 12

This week we forgive, ditch our bras, and live simply. We enjoy sugar cookies and mojitos. Play with kittens! And so much more.

There’s plenty here to help you have another fun-tastic week!

July 6:

National Fried Chicken Day: Order or make your very favorite fried chicken for dinner. Yes, you can bake your “fried” chicken if you must. 🙂

Take Your Webmaster to Lunch Day: If you have one, you know just how useful webmasters can be. Critical to your business even! Show your appreciation with lunch. Assuming restaurants are open in your city and your webmaster is willing to go to one! If not, consider sending lunch or a restaurant gift card to your webmaster.

World Kissing Day: Also known as International Kissing Day, this day is all about—what else?—kissing! It started celebrating romantic kissing but has expanded to any and all kinds of kisses. Of course, these days celebrating should probably be limited to romantic partners & other household members. And any pets that will tolerate your smooches!

National Hand Roll Day: Celebrate the 2nd annual Hand Roll Day with sushi hand rolls! But you knew that, right? Just make sure they’re hand rolls, not cut rolls. Because cut rolls would be just all wrong for this day. 😉

July 7:

Global Forgiveness Day: Forgiveness is good for you. Even if the one you’ve forgiven never knows about it. So forgive at least one person to celebrate this day.

Tell the Truth Day: “They” say the truth will set you free. Well, we don’t know about all that, but telling the truth does free you from having to remember which lie you told to which people. So there’s that. But if the truth is potentially upsetting to the other person, at least be kind about telling it.

World Chocolate Day: Reward yourself for being forgiving and truthful with chocolate! Whatever your favorite chocolate is, you deserve it.

National Father Daughter Take a Walk Day: Dads, call your daughters & invite them to take a walk with you. Daughters, call your Dad & make the same invitation! You know you probably don’t see enough of each other. So take this opportunity to enjoy each other’s company. Maybe even plan to make it a regular thing?

National Macaroni Day: Make your favorite macaroni dish to celebrate this yummy day. If that’s mac & cheese, go for it! But there’s plenty of other things you can make with macaroni too, from pasta salads to chili mac. And even breakfast soup! Did you know macaroni doesn’t have to be elbow-shaped?

National Strawberry Sundae Day: What’s more summery than strawberries? Strawberry sundaes, of course! So after you’ve celebrated macaroni, head out for a strawberry sundae. Or make one yourself. Make enough to share, too!

July 8:

SCUD Day: Savor the Comic, Unplug the Drama. Make it a fun, drama-free day. And if you can’t completely avoid drama, at least do your best to laugh at it.

National Video Game Day: Play video games! Have a tournament. Try a new game. Revisit an old favorite you haven’t played in a while. However you choose to celebrate, enjoy it!

Coca-Cola Day: Celebrate the birth of the man who created that delightful drink we call Coke, John Stith Pemberton. He was born on July 8, 1831 and invented his still-popular drink in 1886.

National Freezer Pop Day: Celebrate the very first National Freezer Pop Day with your favorite freezer pops! Yes, pops. Plural. Because how can you have just one on a hot July day?!

National Chocolate With Almonds Day: The day after we celebrate chocolate of all kinds we celebrate a more specific kind. The kind with almonds! Now it doesn’t matter if it’s dark or milk or white. Plain chocolate, chocolate surrounding coconut or nougat, or any other kind. Just as long as the chocolate you’re eating also contains almonds, you’re celebrating right!

July 9:

National Sugar Cookie Day: What? You only eat sugar cookies at Christmas time? You’re crazy! These sweet, crisp cookies are perfect any day of the year. If you don’t want to heat up your kitchen with the oven, buy your favorite sugar cookies to munch on for the day.

National No Bra Day: On this day women everywhere go braless! Unless that causes pain. Then support the cause by wearing something purple. And men everywhere can also show support by wearing purple. Such a simple celebration. 🙂

July 10:

Don’t Step on a Bee Day: This is very good advice. Stepping on bees can be painful for both them and you. The poor bee gets squished. And it may sting you before it dies. So please, follow this advice on July 10 and every day!

National Kitten Day: Snuggle a kitten! After you’ve worn it out with lots of playtime, anyway. If you have a kitten of your very own this will be simple. If not, visit a friend with a kitten. Or, if you’ve been thinking about getting a kitten, this would be the perfect day. Head out to the shelter to find your very own fuzzy little bundle of energy & joy. Animal Advocate Colleen Paige founded this day but doesn’t seem to be associated with it any more

Teddy Bears Picnic: Gather your kids & all their favorite teddy bears for a fun day of picnicking! Remember to sing the Teddy Bears Picnic song, too.

National Pina Colada Day: Wind down after a long week with a refreshing Pina Colada. If you can do it on a beach somewhere, even better! Poolside works too. But even if you can’t be near water, this sweet, coconutyy rum drink will make you feel like you are! So whip up a pina colada and enjoy. (And remember to always drink responsibly).

July 11:

Bowdler’s Day: This day is about censorship and one man’s attempts to remove offensive words or scenes from works like Shakespeare and even the Bible.

All American Pet Photo Day: Take photos of all your pets to share with the world! Dress them up or not, it’s up to you (and your pets!). Make the pictures sweet or funny. Snap candids of your pets sleeping or playing, or pose them if they’ll let you. Even better, do a bit of everything, and then share your favorites.

National Mojito Day: This weekend we’re enjoying the rum drinks! First pina coladas, and now mojitos. This drink takes all of about 5 minutes to make, so make a tall, refreshing mojito and relax. (And again, drink responsibly).

National Blueberry Muffin Day: Have you made (or bought) blueberry muffins for National Blueberry Month yet? If not, this is the day to do it! And if you have you obviously love blueberry muffins. So it won’t be much of a hardship to make (or buy) them again to celebrate this day. Here’s a blueberry muffin recipe, if you need it!

National Rainier Cherry Day: Snack on, cook with, and or bake with Rainier cherries for this day. And only Rainier cherries! If you have other cherries on hand, save them for another day. Rainier cherries are a cross between Van and Bing cherries, and they’re quite delicate but fabulously delicious.

July 12:

Different Colored Eyes Day: Do you have heterochromia iridis? Then this day celebrates you! Animals can have this condition, too. So maybe your pet has it? And really this day celebrates any unique trait you may have. So whatever it is that makes you different, celebrate it!

National Simplicity Day: On this day we slow down & live simply. Then maybe think about how you can simplify your life in general? Because a simpler life is a less stressful life. We celebrate simplicity on the birthday of Henry David Thoreau, who advocated simple living (among other things).

Paper Bag Day: Paper bags are good alternatives to single-use plastic bags for some uses. They’re both recyclable and compostable, while plastic is neither of those things. So use paper bags wherever possible for this day and beyond. And think of other uses for paper bags, too. Like craft projects! If there’s a gift-giving opportunity coming up, one of your craft projects could be to decorate a paper bag for a one-of-a-kind gift bag.

National Pecan Pie Day: Make your Sunday extra-special with homemade pecan pie! Yes, you may buy one instead. It’s hard to go wrong with pecan pie.
