Celebration Ideas for June 8 – 14, 2020

The world seems to be falling apart these days. And while we don’t want to minimize the causes of our shared pain—virus, racial injustice, economic uncertainty, and more—we do believe so much stress requires stepping back, at least briefly, each day to find ways to bring joy and purpose to our lives.

If joining the peaceful protests happening around the country fits your purpose, we support that. If you’d like to but aren’t sure where to find one, this Mashable post offers places to start.

And as usual, we bring you a mix of lighthearted and serious celebrations to help you make the most of every single day.

So do take a peek and plan your week. And remember to always …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All June Long

June offers a wealth of observances celebrating the great outdoors. Including one literally celebrating the Great Outdoors! So get out there and celebrate your outdoor passion!

Perennial Gardening Month: Annuals are a quick & easy way to add color to your garden. And they make it simple to change the look & feel every year. But perennials bring long-lasting beauty to your garden. They come back each year with predictable regularity. And they change throughout the year too, so there’s always something new happening. And June, after you’ve gotten all your annuals in, is the perfect time to decide where you need some perennials to complete your garden.

National Rose Month: Speaking of perennials, how about roses? Every garden can benefit from a rose bush or two! They come in a seemingly endless variety of colors & shapes, so you’re sure to find several that would fit you perfectly.

National Great Outdoors Month: Your garden is absolutely a great outdoor space to enjoy. And you can do it just about any time you like! But there’s much more of the outdoors to explore. And June is the time to do it! So get out on the water, the trails, or whatever outdoor spaces you enjoy exploring. Nature is a great stress reliever. And we all need more of that these days.

National Camping Month: One way to enjoy many activities the great outdoors offers is camping. Not only do you get to sleep out in the fresh air, you spend your days fishing, hiking, and enjoying all the sights & sounds nature offers.

National Ocean Month: Learn about the wonders of the ocean and what we can all do to protect them so they can continue to amaze and serve us.

National Rivers Month: Oceans aren’t the only waters that get the spotlight in June. Rivers are also important to life and enjoyment. So get out at least once this month to enjoy the peace & beauty of a river near you.

Weekly Celebrations for June’s 2nd Week

Our week-long celebrations also focus mostly on the outdoors. Although not necessarily in quite the same way as the monthly ones.

And then there’s appreciating our pets, which seems like a 52-week-a-year celebration to us!

International Clothesline Week (June 6 – 13, 2020): For this week we learn about the benefits of hanging our laundry out to dry instead of using the dryer. For example, it’s free (after you pay for your clothesline, anyway!), it leaves your clothes smelling fresh, and it’s better for the environment (doesn’t use electricity!). So string a line or set up a drying rack and reap the benefits of line drying.

National Fishing and Boating Week (June 6 – 14, 2020): If you can, head out on your boat during this week and go fishing! Or just go boating if you’re not a fan of fishing. Of course, if you prefer fly fishing you won’t want to be on a boat to fish. But you could go boating on a different day. How you spend the week is up to you.

Pet Appreciation Week (June 7 – 13, 2020): This is an easy one! Spend all week showing your pets just how much you appreciate them! Take your pup for a walk or a hike. Let kitty chase her favorite feather toy or string. And shower them all with all the treats & cuddles they can handle.

Celebration Days coming up for June 8 thru June 14

Get ready to make life beautiful, bring light to blood cancer patients, and pause for the pledge.

We also indulge in strawberry-rhubarb pie and German chocolate cake. Then sip gin & iced tea. Also make a doctor’s appointment, knit in public, and weed our gardens. Plus much more, of course!

Are you ready to have another fun-tastic week?

June 8:

World Ocean’s Day: The oceans are critical to life as we know it, even for those of us who live far from them. So let’s celebrate all they do to sustain us and vow to help protect them. This whole month is also National Ocean Month, so consider keeping the celebration going.

National Upsy Daisy Day: On this day we climb out of bed with a positive attitude & the intention to have a glorious day. Of course the ultimate idea is to bring this positive attitude to every morning. But first we have to start, and June 8 is the day to do that.

Best Friends Day: Celebrate your best friend! If you can get together, that’d be ideal. But if not, at least connect with a call. And if your best friend happens to have four legs & fur? Celebrate with lots of cuddles & treats! Yes, you can have a human best friend and an animal best friend, so if that describes you then celebrate them both.

Name Your Poison Day: Bartenders used to (or maybe still do? We haven’t heard it recently) ask you to “name your poison” when ordering a drink. But this day isn’t so much about drinking (although it could be!) as about making a choice. Possibly a choice between 2 or more bad options (i.e. the least deadly “poison”). So if you have a hard choice to make, this is the day to make it.

June 9:

World Pet Memorial Day: On this day we remember the pets we’ve loved who left us all too soon. But don’t remember them with sorrow. Remember the love and joy they brought to our lives.

National Donald Duck Day: Celebrate the screen debut of everybody’s favorite cranky duck on June 9, 1934. Celebrate by watching some Donald. Maybe even his debut film, The Wise Little Hen.

National Call Your Doctor Day: This day is a reminder for women to call their doctors … to schedule their Well-Woman Exams! No, it’s not fun. But it is important. So if you’ve been putting it off, stop that & make the call.

International Archives Day: Celebrate archives! Yes, it sounds boring, but archives help preserve history. And isn’t that worth celebrating?

National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day: Strawberries & rhubarb are each delicious on their own. But put them together and you get a phenomenal pie! So enjoy a slice to celebrate this day. If you have the time & desire, a homemade rhubarb pie is best!

June 10:

Iced Tea Day: Make your favorite iced tea & sip it slowly while savoring the day. Or at least a few minutes alone to relax & unwind. You might even like to try different flavorings in your iced tea.

National Ballpoint Pen Day: Celebrate the first successful patent filing for the ballpoint pen, on June 10, 1943. For many of us most of our writing is done digitally these days. But lots of us also use handwritten notes & reminders, so ballpoint pens are still quite relevant. No matter how often you normally use one, this is the day to write something with a ballpoint pen.

National Herbs and Spices Day: Herbs & spices make all our foods taste better. They definitely deserve a day of celebration! For this day find a new use for a favorite herb. Or try a new spice. No matter how you choose to celebrate, make sure it’s a flavorful day.

Black Cow Day: Relax & enjoy a cold, creamy Black Cow. You might know it better as a Root Beer Float.

National Egg Roll Day: Does a Black Cow pair well with egg rolls? There’s only one way to find out! Make or order your favorite eggs rolls for a simple but delightful dinner. Brown cow optional. 😉

June 11:

Corn on the Cob Day: You know there’s only one way to celebrate this one, right? Gnaw your way through a perfectly cooked—and buttered if you’d like—ear of corn. Maybe even 2 or 3! Compound butters can add even more divine flavor to your corn on the cob.

Making Life Beautiful Day: Although this day was started by a beauty company, it’s not really about physical beauty. It’s about all the little things that make life beautiful. So nurture the relationships that matter to you. Help someone. Give someone a complement. Just do what feels right. And beautiful.

National German Chocolate Cake Day: Ooohhhh!! We’re pretty sure making and sharing a German Chocolate Cake would go a long way toward making someone’s life beautiful! Here’s a German Chocolate Cake recipe to help.

June 12:

Loving Day: Celebrate the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision recognizing the legality of interracial marriage. In some ways we’ve come a long way since then. And in others it seems like we’ve hardly made any further progress at all.

Crowded Nest Awareness Day: This day … uh, celebrates? … what happens when adult kids need to move back home. Sometimes with spouses & kids of their own. The formerly “empty nest” suddenly becomes a “crowded nest”! Now, this seems to be a mostly modern (and American?) “problem,” because throughout history it’s been common & expected for 2 or more generations to live together. And in many cultures it still is.

National Jerky Day: Celebrate the protein-packed, dried meat snack known as jerky with—what else?—your favorite jerky. You might even like to try making your own jerky. Don’t want to turn on your oven? This recipe includes directions for using air filters & a box fan to dry your jerky!

National Peanut Butter Cookie Day: After your savory jerky snack you’ll be ready for something sweet. Like peanut butter cookies! Make or buy your favorites. If you need a recipe, try these soft peanut butter cookies.

June 13:

World Gin Day: Enjoy your favorite gin your favorite way!

National Kitchen Klutzes of America Day: Are you a kitchen klutz? Do your dreams of cakes & pies & roasts & souffles end in well, gigantic messes and at best barely edible food? Then this day is for you! And you may celebrate it by not doing anything in the kitchen. Order in or get someone else to cook.

National Weed Your Garden Day: Your plants have hopefully been in the ground for at least a couple of weeks now. And they’re growing nicely! (We hope). Unfortunately, so are the weeds. Ideally you’re pulling up those pesky little green shoots every few days. But whether you’ve been weeding or not, this is the day to get out there & rid your garden of all unwanted growth! And then plan to keep on top of the weeding.

National Sewing Machine Day: On this day we celebrate and thank all those who dusted off their sewing machines and made masks these past few months! No, that’s not actually the reason for the day. But for this year it seems like an appropriate way to celebrate.

Random Acts of Light Day: This day is part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s campaign to bring light to the lives of people fighting blood cancers. The day also brings awareness to the need for more research into finding cures for blood cancers. If you know someone affected by blood cancer, do something to make their day a little brighter. If not, help spread the word.

World Wide Knit in Public Day: If you knit, this is the day to get out with other knitters & let everyone see you do it! Join an official event if there’s one near you (check out the Find a KIP dropdown list to see where they are). Or organize your own. Or heck, just sit outside somewhere & knit! There’s no wrong way to celebrate this one (well… unless you’re crocheting … 😉).

National Rosé Day: If you’re having wine with dinner, make it rosé! Or just enjoy a glass or 2 for a relaxing evening.

June 14:

Pause for the Pledge Day: On Flag Day we also stop what we’re doing at 7 pm Eastern to face the flag and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Simple! But profound.

International Bath Day: Take a bath, whether you need it or not! 😁 And as you lower yourself into the water pay attention to how the water rises. Because that’s the actual reason for the day (not getting clean!). It was supposedly on a June 14th that Greek mathematician Archimedes leapt out of his bath shouting Eureka! He had just figured out he could measure an object’s volume by submerging it in water.

National Bourbon Day: Relax on your Sunday evening with your favorite bourbon. And of course enjoy it your favorite way, whether that’s neat, over ice, or in your favorite cocktail!

National Strawberry Shortcake Day: Make dessert the super-simple, summery strawberry shortcake. Or, if you’re having a Sunday brunch, these are perfect too. Here’s a recipe for homemade everything Strawberry Shortcakes. Sooo good!
