Celebration Ideas for March 5 – 11, 2018

It’s the first full week of March, and you know what that means … Spring is almost here!

But first we have to adjust our clocks and our schedules for Daylight Savings Time as we “spring ahead.” Spring?!? Seriously? Who has the energy to “spring” anywhere after losing an hour of sleep?

Luckily before that happens we get to enjoy noodles, Oreos, and peanut clusters.

We celebrate pet sitters, proofreading, and programs that let kids read to animals.

We also encourage small businesses to be heard, recognize women’s achievements, and slow down long enough to read an ebook … but not during the National Day of Unplugging. Because your tablet, ebook reader, and other tech is supposed to be unplugged during those 24 hours.

There’s lots of other worthwhile causes and events to celebrate this week. So take a peek and plan your week!

As usual, Enjoy!

Celebrate All March Long

Don’t let March pass you by without checking out some of the month-long celebrations. You might want to start by experimenting with noodle recipes. Yum!

And what could be cuter than kids reading to animals? Not much! It’s beneficial to the kids and animals, too!

Colors can do more than brighten a room. They can brighten your mood too! But only the right colors …

Paws to Read Month: Kids reading to therapy dogs or shelter animals benefits both the children and the animals! Many states have programs. See if one of the programs listed here is near you. Or see if your local shelter lets kids read to the animals.

National Noodle Month: Celebrate the noodle in all its forms this month. Rice, Soba, pappardelle, udon, bucatini, and more. Here are 5 recipes to get you started.

National Color Therapy Month: Did you know color can affect your mood? So how can you celebrate this? Maybe experiment to find out how different colors make you feel. Or find 31 other ideas here (the link goes to a PDF).

Weekly Celebrations For March’s 1st Full Week

This week we celebrate the people who make sure you pet gets pampered even when you’re not there to do it. Also school breakfasts and ebooks.

And an especially timely celebration this year, the annual campaign to end domestic violence & sexual assault.

National Pet Sitters Week (March 4 – 10): This week honors professional pet sitters who take such great care of their clients’ precious pets. It also tries to raise awareness of the value of using professional sitters for your pets. This is the celebration’s 24th year.

National School Breakfast Week (March 5 – 9): Does your child’s school participate?

Read an Ebook Week: Do as the name says, and read an e-book! Now we hope actual paper books never go away. But ebooks have their advantages too. If you don’t normally read ebooks, give one a try. You can find links to free ones here. If you do like ebooks, well pull up one you haven’t gotten around to and get started!

No More Week (March 4 – 10): The 5th annual campaign to support “NO MORE” domestic violence and sexual assault. To take part, take the pledge, donate (time or money), and/or join an event if there’s one near you.

Celebration Days Coming Up For March 5 thru March 11

As usual the daily celebrations include some delicious days, celebrating the yumminess of Oreos, peanut clusters, and more.

We also observe some serious days, encouraging small businesses to be heard, celebrating women’s achievements, and keeping our kidneys healthy.

There’s even a day for bagpipes! Plus more, of course.

So take a look & see which days would make your week most awesome … It almost certainly has to include the Day of Awesomeness!

(The beginning Daylight Savings Time probably won’t make your week at all awesome. But it can’t be avoided. And forgetting would make your week even less awesome. So we’ve included it here).

And most of all, Enjoy.

March 5:

National Absinthe Day: Enjoy a licorice-flavored burn today with a glass of “the green fairy.”

Fun Facts about Names Day: Today you may want to learn more about your name. Or just learn some trivia about names. Like these names various courts found unacceptable.

World Tennis Day: The goal of this day is promoting the game & increasing participation by young players. The best way to celebrate? With a game of tennis, of course! Local tennis clubs or sports centers may even have events for the day.

March 6:

Oreo Cookie Day: Today marks the anniversary of the day Nabisco (then known as National Biscuit Company) first called their new cookie creation “Oreo.”

National Dress Day]: A day to wear your favorite dress. And reminisce about the events where you wore dresses. We know not all women love dresses. But if you do, own it! And celebrate this day.

March 7:

National Cereal Day: Enjoy your favorite cereal today! Or try making your own. Or cook with it! Just make it a cereal-rific day.

National Be Heard Day: This day is for small businesses to stand up and make their voices heard. If you’re part of a small business you know how hard this can be. Today might be a good day to reevaluate your marketing strategy to see where you might be able to make a bigger impact (and get heard!).

March 8:

International Women’s Day: Celebrate women’s social, economic, and political achievements today. And recognize the achievements we still need to make, as the #MeToo movement has shown so clearly.

World Kidney Day: If your kidneys are working right, spend a moment today thanking them & learning how to keep them healthy. Because kidney disease is serious. And often deadly.

National Proofreading Day: Yes, spelling and grammar do matter! Because misplaced commas & other mistakes can completely change a sentence’s meaning. So don’t be misunderstood … proofread!

National Peanut Cluster Day: Mmmmmm …. Peanuts and chocolate. Or peanuts & caramel. Or even butterscotch! Indulge today.

March 9:

National Day of Unplugging: Can you unplug for a full 24 hours? It starts at sundown March 9 and runs until sundown March 10. Even if you can’t do the full 24 hours, try for at least a few hours! (the hours while you’re asleep don’t really count).

Panic Day: Today you must panic over every little thing! Ok, not really. But a little bit of panic can sometimes be useful. So use it! And even have some fun with it, if you’d like.

Get Over it Day: Do as the name says and get over it. “It” can be anything you’ve been holding on to for too long: an ex, an insult, a lost opportunity … Whatever it is, figure out how to let it go. Now that doesn’t have to mean forgetting. But it does mean not continuing to stew over it.

March 10:

Land Line Telephone Day: Do you still have a land line telephone? If you do, make a point of making a call on it today! Did you know there are museums dedicated to telephones?

International Bagpipe Day: What’s that you say? There’s a day devoted to bagpipes and bagpiping? There sure is! And there’s even a Bagpipe Society and a Bagpipe Conference!

International Day of Awesomeness: Go out and be your awesome self today. We are unsure if it’s possible to be awesome while playing the bagpipes…

March 11:

World Plumbing Day: You probably don’t think much about your plumbing … except when it’s not working. Well today’s the day to give thanks for indoor plumbing. Because it really does help keep us healthier, and not everyone has it.

Johnny Appleseed Day: This is actually one of 2 Johnny Appleseed Days. The other celebrates his birth on September 26 (1774). This one celebrates … well, we’re not sure! His death is often reported as March 18, although that may not be completely accurate. The March date may also simply be to coincide roughly with planting season.

Daylight Savings Time Begins: Not sure losing an hour of sleep is anything to celebrate. But we’re including this here so you don’t forget! So remember: 2am will magically become 3am the morning of March 11.
