Celebration Ideas for August 13 – 19, 2018

The middle of August has arrived!

And in many places it has brought with it record-breaking heat. Hopefully you have air conditioning, or some other way to cool off. And hopefully we’ll get a break soon.

Meanwhile, we have a wealth of delicious, fun, silly, and serious ways to get your mind off the weather and onto more interesting and enjoyable topics.

So much deliciousness this week. Really all month! And so many different ways to enjoy that deliciousness.

And in between your feasting we celebrate some history anniversaries, animals, and silliness.

So it is indeed time again to take a peek and plan your week. And as always, remember to …

Enjoy!

Celebrate All August Long

August is a delicious month! And you can mix & match your paninis, goat cheeses, and peaches to celebrate in the way you find most scrumptious. Bon appetit!

National Panini Month: Enjoy the warm, melty, grilled sandwich that is the panini all month long! This celebration has been going strong since 2008, when Sargento Foods created it. Need some panini inspiration? Here are recipes for every day of the month (although some of them look much better than others!).

National Goat Cheese Month: August also celebrates the cheeses made from goat’s milk. That’s right: cheeses. As in more than one. Just like cheeses made from cow’s milk. Only different. ;) Try a few & pick your favorite. Make at least one of those paninis (for Panini Month) using a goat cheese. And find more goat cheese inspiration with these recipes.

National Peach Month: For a refreshing change from sandwiches and goat cheese we have peaches! Sweet juicy peaches are the perfect dessert just as they are. But they’re also amazing in salads, salsas, pies, and more. Titan Farms has a passion for peaches & they offer a ton of yummy recipes, along with 3 free downloadable peach recipe books. Enjoy!

Weekly Celebrations for August 13 – 19

This week we get back to the basics of romance & celebrate flight. Airplane rides can be pretty romantic. Right?

National Resurrect Romance Week (August 12 – 18): Bring back real romance this week. Romance that comes from the heart. The kind you show by spending time with & paying attention to the person you love. Not the kind you celebrate with things.

National Aviation Week: Celebrate all things aviation during the week that includes Orville Wright’s birthday (National Aviation Day), August 19.

Celebration Days coming up for Aug 13 thru Aug. 19

Deliciousness, seriousness, and silliness. We’ve got it all. A bit more seriousness than silliness this week. But lots of deliciousness throughout.

From filet mignon and prosecco to lemon meringue and creamsicles this week will delight.

We also love our feet, relax, and get thrifty. And we remember to appreciate black cats while spreading the word about protecting honey bees and orangutans.

Let’s also remember to honor the Native Americans who may have made the critical difference in World War II.

Plus much more.

So let’s take a few moments to plan for a fun-tastic week before we head out to enjoy the weekend.

August 13:

Left Handers Day: Are you left handed? This is your day! Do you know any left-handers? Take them out for lunch to celebrate their uniqueness. And try eating that meal left-handed!

National Prosecco Day: Enjoy a sparkling cocktail in celebration of this bright, refreshing wine. Get some recipe ideas here.

National Filet Mignon Day: For this day you must savor filet mignon for at least one meal. Make it yourself or see if a restaurant near you is having a special for the day.

August 14:

Navajo Code Talkers Day: This day honors the Navajo Marines who helped the Allies win the war … simply by speaking in their own language. Except their contributions to the war weren’t simple at all. They were crucial. Celebrate this day by learning more about them & listening to them tell their stories in their own words.

International Rosé Day: One of 3 days to enjoy your favorite rosé. Or discover a new one. This one was created by the Wine Geeks blog in 2005. The other 2 (National Rosé Day and another International day) are in June, so we’ve already missed them. Next year we’ll be sure to celebrate them all!

National Creamsicle Day: Mmmm … I haven’t had a creamsicle in ages. Gonna have to change that! Because, as I’m sure you know by now, if it’s a food day we must enjoy that food! And for this day that food is creamsicles.

August 15:

National Check the Chip Day: This day is a reminder of how microchipping your pets can help them find their way home if they get lost. If your pets aren’t already chipped, make an appointment to do that. Then get the chip registered. If they are chipped, check the information on file for that chip to be sure it’s up to date & accurate.

National Relaxation Day: After you’ve checked that chip it’s time to relax. So do whatever relaxes you: Get a massage, curl up with a good book, garden, take a nature walk. It’s all up to you! (But don’t let the choices stress you out … that’s the opposite of what this day is about).

National Lemon Meringue Pie Day: Would a slice of lemon meringue pie help you relax? Well you’re in luck! You have official permission to indulge. If baking relaxes you, consider making your pie. Don’t have a recipe? Try this one.

August 16:

Tell a Joke Day: If you think you’re just hilarious this is the day for you! It’s official permission (ok, unofficial permission) to tell a joke. Now the name suggests one joke, but feel free to interpret that to mean one joke to every person you come across today. :D (And if you’re not a joke fan, you might want to avoid any jokesters you know for the day).

National Airborne Day: This day commemorates the anniversary of the day in 1940 when the Army conducted its first test parachute jump. National Airborne Day became an official National day in 2002 by proclamation of President George W. Bush.

National Rum Day: A bit of rum will help you celebrate Tell a Joke Day with style! You and your friend be much funnier. ;) Find some rum cocktail recipes here. Jokes optional.

August 17:

Black Cat Appreciation Day: This is the day to let your favorite black feline know how much you love him or her. And to spread the word about how awesome black cats are. Don’t have a black cat? Head out to your local shelter to meet some … and maybe bring home your new best friend?

I Love My Feet Day: Be good to your feet, they take quite a beating most days! Stuffed into shoes. Carrying you up & down steps. Absorbing the shocks of running & jumping. Suffering the indignities of dry cracked heals, stubbed toes, & poorly maintained toenails. No wonder they hurt! Give your feet some extra love for this day & show them just how much you really appreciate all they do for you.

National Thrift Shop Day: This is the day to go bargain-hunting at the thrift shop! It’s a win-win as you get great deals and help the charity associated with the shop. Now you may have gone bargain-hunting last week for Garage Sale Day, but that’s no reason not to see what new deals you can find this week. And if you held a garage sale last week, use some of your profits to find something new (preferably something you need, not something you’ll turn around & sell at next year’s garage sale).

August 18:

World Honey Bee Day: The 3rd Saturday in August is for the honey bees. Because honey bees work hard for us, pollinating lots of the foods we eat. And too many of them keep dying. :( So celebrate the honey bee on this day and every day … and plant a bee-friendly garden to help protect their little lives. 💕

Bad Poetry Day: Write some bad poetry in honor of this day. Did you know there are actually whole books devoted to bad poetry? It’s true!

Clear the Shelters Day: If you’ve been thinking about adopting a new pet, this is the day to get serious! Shelters across the country will be lowering or waiving adoption fees to help all their animals find their furrever homes. 💕

August 19:

National Aviation Day: On Orville Wright’s birthday we celebrate flight and honor all aviators, especially the man himself. Orville was the brother who took the 1st successful plane ride (in a fixed-wing craft).

World Photo Day: Inspire positive change in the world through photography. Don’t worry, that’s not as intimidating as it sounds. Go out & take some inspiring photos … whatever inspires you! And take a look through some of the photos on the World Photo Day blog.

World Orangutan Day: The palm oil industry and deforestation is having devastating effects on the orangutan population. Be a part of this day by spreading the word & pledging to help.
