We hope you haven’t caught it. Or that you’ve had a mild illness if you did.

And if you have kids left directionless by school closings, we hope you’re managing to keep them occupied & learning.

But no matter what’s happening in the world, it’s important to find reasons to enjoy each day. And that’s what a lot of these unofficial celebrations do. Others help you learn or find purpose in the day. All important & useful ways to spend your time.

Celebrate for the rest of March

Do your best to keep your mood positive as we enter the home stretch of March with very different lives than we had just a couple of weeks ago.

Sing with Your Child Month: Make the most of your child’s time off school. In addition to making sure they keep up with academic lessons, give them some music time too. So sing some of their favorite songs, learn some new ones, and even make some up if they’re feeling creative.

International Mirth Month: The world needs as much mirth as it can handle right now! So grab this month by the horns & celebrate hard. Then keep the celebration going into April, because we’re still going to need it. Please note: We are not making light of this pandemic. Nor are we suggesting that mirth will cure a coronavirus infection or solve any of the problems the world is having. But neither will panic. What moments of mirth can do better than panic is help you weather this storm with your sanity intact.

National Color Therapy Month: Studies suggest color really can affect your mood. Or maybe your mood affects how you perceive colors. The science isn’t really consistent. And color preferences are not consistent among all people. But even so, if there are colors you find soothing, it might be worth seeking them out these days. Or consider learning more about color therapy & finding out how different colors affect you & other members of your family.

Weekly Celebrations for March’s 4th Week

If you’re stuck at home, you might as well be productive. And let’s not forget to thank any doctors we may see, for this week and beyond.

National Cleaning Week (March 22 – 28, 2020): With many of us still stuck at home, we have more time for spring cleaning! Yes, we know there are so many other things you (and we!) would rather be doing. But this year we can’t do them anyway. So make the best of your forced isolation & get some deep spring-cleaning done! So toss, organize, clean, & collect stuff to donate when thrift stores re-open.

National Physicians Week (March 25 – 31, 2020): This week celebrates the doctors who dedicate their lives to giving their patients the best care possible. While the week is mostly for doctors & medical students to support each other, we can all thank our doctors for all they do for us. Especially during this time of uncertainty.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival was supposed to run March 20 – April 12 this year. Sadly all events appear to be cancelled/postponed for now due to coronavirus concerns. But the flowers don’t care, and they’re on track to reach peak bloom right about now! Obviously you won’t want to travel to see them, but if you’re already nearby & can view them safely, it could provide a few moments of peace & awe.




 

Celebration Days coming up for March 23 thru March 29

Try some new recipes (or old favorites!), or even some new ingredients. Learn about some animals, create some art, & make up a holiday.

Thank some veterans, support small businesses, & turn out the lights for an hour.

All these celebrations & more are waiting to help you have a fun-tastic week. And hopefully help you cope with the state of the world just a little better.

 

March 23:

National Puppy Day: Puppies! Go out & love all the puppies.You know they all deserve it. Or adopt a puppy. And if you can’t actually go out for a puppy fix, at least give your puppy lots of extra love & treats. Assuming you have one, of course. For the rest of us, we may need to get our puppy fix in the form of pictures & videos online … so if you can post some of those, you’ll probably make a lot of people happy!

National Near Miss Day: Did you know that way back in 1989 a monstrous asteroid almost hit earth? And we didn’t even know about it until it had passed? Celebrate the fact that you’re alive today because if this thing had hit a lot of people wouldn’t be.

National Chia Day: Celebrate the little seed packed with antioxidants, fiber, calcium, and more. They’re so good for you, you’ll want to add some to every meal to celebrate this day. And then you may just want to keep doing it all year long! Check out these recipes that let you do just that.

National Melba Toast Day: Enjoy the thin, crisp slices of toast known as Melba toast for the day. Have a snack of toasts with your favorite toppings or add them to a meal.

National Tamale Day: If you can, pick up some tamales for dinner! Because how can you celebrate Tamale Day without tamales? And although it’s not traditional, you could probably even sprinkle some neutral-tasting chia seeds on them. But adding Melba toast would probably be a bit too weird.

 

March 24:

Chocolate Covered Raisin Day: Snack on chocolate covered raisins for the day. Chocolate & raisins are both good for you (in moderation!), so you can snack guilt-free.

Diabetes Alert Day: The American Diabetes Association calls this day a “wake-up call” for people to recognize the seriousness of diabetes. Use the day to learn the risk factors & find out if you may be at risk. Then take steps to lower your risk. If you already have diabetes, are you doing all you can to manage it?

National Ag Day: This day celebrates the vital role agriculture plays in our lives. Without a robust agriculture industry our lives would look very different, from our food & clothing choices to the economy in general. Why not learn more about how ag affects your daily life? National Cheesesteak Day: Go get yourself a cheesesteak sandwich for lunch. You know you want one! And you’ve been working hard, so you deserve one too. You might even be able to score a deal on your cheesesteak as many restaurants, including national ones, offer deals in honor of the day. Depending on where you live, you may need to get your cheesesteak to go.

 

March 25:

Manatee Appreciation Day: Manatees are kinda weird looking, but they’re also quite fascinating. And a bit fragile. They literally need warm water to survive, so we humans must ensure the warm coastal waters they call home are safe for them.

Little Red Wagon Day: Did you have a little red wagon as a child? Do/did your kids have little red wagons? This day celebrates the power of imagination and these wagons’ ability to fuel it. Share your little red wagon stories for the day.

National Medal of Honor Day: This day honors all recipients of the US’s highest military honor. Use social media to thank all those who went above & beyond the call of duty. And if you personally know any Medal of Honor recipients, make sure to thank them from all of us.

Pecan Day: On this date in 1775 George Washing planted a pecan tree at Mount Vernon. The tree was a gift from Thomas Jefferson.

National Lobster Newburg Day: Enjoy this classic lobster dish for dinner. It’s incredibly simple to make, coming together in just about a half hour if you start with cooked lobster meat. Try this recipe.

 

March 26:

Make Up Your Own Holiday Day: For this day you get to decide what you want to celebrate! And you don’t need any kind of official declaration. Just declare it yourself & celebrate it.

Purple Day: This day is all about raising awareness of epilepsy. Believe it or not, as many as 1 in 100 people may have epilepsy. And in half the cases there’s no known cause. So wear purple for the day & help spread the word.

Live Long & Prosper Day: Celebrate Leonard Nemoy’s birthday with his most famous greeting, uttered by his most famous character. Of course, you don’t have to be a Star Trek or Spock fan to celebrate, but it sure does help!

National Nougat Day: If you enjoy candy with a nougat center, this day is for you. Enjoy your favorite nougat candies to celebrate.

National Spinach Day: Before you get to carried away with nougat, fill up on nutritious spinach. Have it in a salad, a dip, soup, a side (like wilted spinach with garlic … yum!), or any way you like. Then you can go back to enjoying some nougat.

 

March 27:

Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day: If you’re a country music fan you most likely like at least one song with a … ahem … quirky title. So, which one’s your favorite? Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off? Did I Shave My Lets for This? You Look Like I Need a Drink?

National Scribble Day: On this day you create art! Even if your art isn’t much more than scribbles. Technically the day is for kids, to encourage kindness & creativity. But even adults can use the reminder that “Great art starts with a Scribble!” So encourage the kids in your life to celebrate. And celebrate with them!

National Joe Day: For this day you must celebrate everyone you know who’s name is Joe. Or Jo. That includes Joseph, Jodie, Josephine, Joey, & any other name that could be shortened to Joe. Or Jo. So buy (or make!) them lunch or dinner. Or even just a cup of coffee. And if you’d like, you can change your name for the day too.

National Spanish Paella Day: After all your scribbling & celebrating Joe, you deserve a simple, savory dinner. Try this Paella for Two recipe, with options for meat, seafood, or vegetarian. Maybe share it with your favorite Joe?

 

March 28:

Earth Hour: Join the symbolic pledge to help protect the environment & the planet. Turn off any non-essential lights for one hour at 8:30 p.m. your local time.

Weed Appreciation Day: No, not that kind of weed! Lots of plants we call weeds are actually quite good & useful. Check out this list of edible weeds you may have growing in your yard right now. And if you don’t, you might want to consider planting some! (Of course, if you want them in your yard, they’re no longer technically weeds … 😊 ).

National Something on a Stick Day: We’re really hoping this refers to food! And in internet-land there seems to be universal agreement that it does. Although since we don’t know who created it we can’t be absolutely sure … At any rate, we propose celebrating with food on a stick. Think kabobs, popsicles, corndogs, etc. Enjoy!

National Black Forest Cake Day: After you’re done enjoying your “something” on a stick (and maybe a few weeds on the side? 😉), make dessert Black Forest Cake! If you have time, consider making your Black Forest Cake.

 

March 29:

National Mom & Pop Business Owners Day: Support the Mom & Pop shops in your neighborhood. Without your business they can’t stay in business. And this is especially true this year, with businesses of all sizes affected by the new coronavirus. So if you can do so safely, get out & support any Mom & Pop businesses that have managed to remain open.

Niagara Falls Runs Dry Day: During the overnight hours of March 28-29, 1848 ice built up at the mouth of the Niagara River, causing the river to dry up and Horseshoe Falls to stop … well, falling! The dry spell lasted about 30 hours and has never been repeated.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day: Troops returning from Vietnam didn’t receive the warm welcome home they deserved 47 years ago. But it’s never to late to recognize those who served bravely. And so in 2017 Congress passed and President Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act. Fly the flag & thank any Vietnam vets you know for their service on the anniversary of our military’s withdrawal from South Vietnam.
