Celebration Ideas for October 22 – 28, 2018

How is your October going? Are your trees in full autumn color? Maybe you’ve had your 1st snowfall of the season? Or are you on the other side of the world where Spring has sprung and your world is turning green?

Wherever you may be there’s plenty to celebrate.

Food and drink celebrations are easy ways to brighten almost any day. And who can resist learning about and spreading love for animals?

As usual we present a mix of daily, weekly, and monthly celebrations to choose from. We hope you will find something that sparks your interest.

So it is now time to take a peek and plan your week. And always remember to …

Enjoy!

Celebrate for the rest of October

You still have a couple of weeks to celebrate Bat Appreciation, Squirrel Awareness, and Pit Bulls (3 of our favorites!). But of course October hosts plenty more month-long celebrations. Some are serious and some delicious.

Home Eye Safety Month: Did you know more than 1 million eye injuries happen at home each year? Yikes! Learn how to keep your eyes and your family’s eyes safe. One of the most important things you can do is simply wear eye protection when cleaning, doing yard work, or during any other activities that could cause dust, debris, or chemicals to fly/splash into your eyes.

Fair Trade Month: This month raises awareness of the fair trade movement and encourages you to buy from businesses committed to fair trade. When you do you help protect the environment and improve the lives of disadvantaged people.

National Applejack Month: What the heck is an applejack? It’s a hard cider with the alcohol content jacked up! At least that was the original meaning of the word. Today there’s apparently an official standard for applejack, as a mixed blend of apple brandy and a neutral grain spirit. Learn more about this intriguing apple drink here. And of course celebrate with a bottle of applejack (just not all at once).

Weekly Celebrations for October 22 – 28, 2018

For this week we discover the truth about wolves, salute all the products our forests allow us to make, and freely express our opinions of it all.

Wolf Awareness Week (October 21 – 27): Help destroy the myths & superstitions about wolves. Humans and wolves can coexist! Learn more about wolves here.

National Forest Products Week (Oct. 21 – 27): This week celebrates all the things we create from our forests. It also promotes sustainable wood production, so those same forests can keep supplying the material for our wood products.

Freedom of Speech Week (Oct. 22 – 28): Also called Free Speech Week, this week celebrates our right to express our beliefs and opinions without fear of government interference. How to celebrate? Exercise your freedom of speech!

Celebration Days coming up for Oct. 22 thru Oct. 28

Deliciousness abounds this week as we enjoy nuts, pumpkin, Boston cream pie, bologna, and more. And wash it all down with champagne!

We have a bit of fun with caps lock and moles (the chemistry kind, not the animal kind). Also Frankenstein’s monster and cranky co-workers.

On the serious side we celebrate the birth of the UN and let our mothers-in-law know how much we care.

Plus much more. So dig in and plan for another fun-tastic week!

October 22:

National Nut Day: Go nutty for this day! Snack on nuts, cook with nuts, and/or bake with nuts. Brazil nuts, walnuts, pecans, almonds … It doesn’t matter what kind. They’re all yummy and good for you! And yes peanuts too, because even though they’re not really nuts, we treat them like nuts. Try to use fair trade nuts, because Liberation Nuts created this day to promote fair trade.

Caps Lock Day: Or should that be CAPS LOCK DAY!!!! For this day you must LEAVE YOUR CAPS LOCK ON ALL DAY. Apparently so you can shout at everybody all day. Iowan Derek Arnold created the day in 2000 to poke fun at people who do this. Apparently Oct. 22 was a random date. But there’s a 2nd CAPS LOCK DAY on June 28, added after pitchman Billy Mays (who always seemed to be shouting) died on June 28, 2009.

Smart is Cool Day: Yes, smart is cool. And while some people still make fun of “nerds” or “geeks,” it’s getting to be more common to be proud of your smarts. So do that for this day.

October 23:

Swallows Depart from San Juan Capistrano Day: The cliff swallows have spent the past 7-ish months living in peace and safety at San Juan Capistrano, California. But around the Day of San Juan they all get up and fly away. They head for Argentina, where they will spend the winter until they return next March.

National Boston Cream Pie Day: Chef M. Sanzian created the Boston Cream Pie in 1856 (in Boston, of course!). And Massachusetts declared the custard-filled, chocolate-covered sponge cake its official dessert in 1996 (but not on October 23). Enjoy a slice or 2 in celebration of the day. If you’re feeling ambitious, make it yourself.

Mole Day: This thoroughly nerdy chemistry day happens on Oct. 23 from 6:02 am to 6:02 pm. Why? Because Avogadro’s number! “Avocado?” you ask? “No. Avogadro!” I say. Scientist Amedeo Avogadro defined the number of particles in one mole (a unit of measurement). That number is approximately 6.02 x 1023. So we celebrate at 6:02 10/23. Get it? The day is mostly celebrated in schools to get kids excited about chemistry.

October 24:

National Bologna Day: Were bologna sandwiches a regular part of your lunches as a kid? Are they still? Make a bologna sandwich with your favorite condiments to celebrate! Or make something a little different, like these Bologna Salad sandwiches.

Food Day: This day promotes eating “real” and sustainably produced food. You know, things like fruits & veggies. And non-factory farmed meats. Choose minimally processed foods, too.

UN Day: This day marks the birth of the United Nations.

October 25:

Sourest Day: So apparently we’re supposed to celebrate this day as the opposite of Sweetest Day. Instead of celebrating sweet things, like candy & happiness, celebrate sour things, like lemons & negative attitudes. Hmmm … sounds of bit like Grouch Day! And actually, according to a couple of sources, the day was originally supposed to celebrate the birthday of a man named Saur. No word on whether he was also sour …

World Pasta Day: It’s the 20th anniversary of this celebration. The International Pasta Organization arranges this annual event, held in different countries each year. But even if you can’t be part of the “official” celebration (it’s in Dubai this year) you can celebrate in spirit. Just eat pasta all day! What could be simpler?

National Greasy Food Day: This day is your permission to indulge in not very healthy (or at all healthy) greasy foods. We’d recommend only doing this for one meal though, especially if you normally eat healthy. Bombarding your body with too much of this stuff could cause regret later! So have a bacon burger with fries (fried fries, not baked fries). Or fried chicken. Or go hog-wild & try deep-fried pizza! Just don’t overdo it.

October 26:

Frankenstein Friday: Celebrate Frankenstein’s monster for this day. Have a Frankenstein party. Make Frankenstein treats. Dress as Frankenstein or its bride. Have fun with it!

National Pumpkin Day: If it’s fall it’s time for pumpkins, and this is the official day to celebrate these delightful orange gourds. Big ones for carving & little ones for your eating pleasure. Did you know Illinois grows more pumpkins than any other state? The state also grew the pumpkin that holds the record for largest in North America. It weighed in at a whopping 2,145 pounds.

National Mule Day: On this day we celebrate the mule, which deserves more admiration than it usually gets. George Washington recognized the animal’s true value, becoming America’s first breeder of this cross between a male donkey and a female horse.

October 27:

Cranky Co-Workers Day: Celebrate the office crank(s) for this day. Sympathize with all their woes. Or join ‘em for a day-long crank-fest.

National Black Cat Day: Black cats often get a bad rap, especially around Halloween when superstitious people may hurt them. And they tend to spend more time in shelters because people don’t want to adopt them. But Black Cat Day honors them as the beautiful little panthers they are … just as worthy of a loving home as any other. This day is different from Black Cat Appreciation Day in August. So give all black cats extra love & treats for this day.

National Pit Bull Awareness Day: Pit Bulls also have an undeserved reputation, and this day (along with the whole month of October) is dedicated to changing that. If you know the truth—pit bulls are big, lovable babies, just like other dogs—won’t you help spread the word?

October 28:

National Chocolate Day: Indulge in your favorite chocolate creations for this day. Chocolate bars, chocolate fudge, chocolate pudding, chocolate cake with chocolate frosting & chocolate ganache … it’s all good!

Champagne Day: Sip some bubbly with your chocolate! And since it’s Sunday, you can start early … with mimosas for brunch. And of course there’s nothing like celebrating the end of a day (any day) with a glass of champagne. This is different from the Champagne Day in December.

National Mother-in-Law Day: Celebrate your mother-in-law on this day. Maybe with some chocolate and champagne? Seriously, very few are actually scary! And even if yours is, maybe she’ll be less so if you treat her to a special day. Just keep in mind she did something you love … she raised your spouse!
