Celebrations Ideas for April 16 – 22, 2018

As April marches on the weather seems to be warming up finally. At least it looks like it’ll mostly stay above freezing. Or maybe it’s just teasing us!

But at least we have plenty of celebrations to keep us warm. Laughter will do that. So will sweating over those last minute taxes. And high-fiving all day.

Hot cheddar fries are good for keeping warm too! And while jelly beans or choccolate covered cashews may not warm you up, they’re sure to help you forget about any cold, wet weather. At least temporarily.

We also have some animal days, a haiku day, and a day for celebrating your husband.

On the serious side, this week includes Earth Day and the anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing.

So take a look and plan your week.

And remember to always look for the bright spots in every day.

Celebrate All During April

For the rest of April we celebrate rural America and agriculture. And one important agricultural crop in particular: soy.

We also celebrate humor and promote pet first aid awareness.

National Grange Month: What on earth is a grange, you ask? Well, it’s actually “National Grange.” And it’s a fraternal organization rooted in agriculture that advocates for rural America.

National Humor Month: Humor is good for you! It can relieve stress, lift your spirits, and more. No, humor can’t cure all that ails you, but it can help make troubles more bearable. So this April start improving your life with a little humor.

Pet First Aid Awareness Month: Do you know what to do in a emergency involving your pet? April is the month to brush up on your pet first aid knowledge.

Soy Foods Month: Do you eat soy? It’s more than just tofu, you know. Try different kinds of soy in different ways this month. Whether you already love it or not, you just might find a new dish to love. Find soy inspiration here.

Weekly Celebrations For April’s 3rd Week

This week the common themes are animals & volunteering. Both important topics, indeed!

Animal Cruelty / Human Violence Awareness Week (April 15 – 21): For this week, learn more about the connection between cruelty to animals and violence toward humans. And spread the word. Mistreating animals is not ok. It’s wrong all by itself. And it’s also a sign a person may be (or may soon start) mistreating humans.

National Pet ID Week (April 15 – 21): No matter how careful we are, sometimes a pet gets away from us. It’s a terrible feeling when a pet gets lost, but if your pet is wearing a tag or has a microchip, the chances of the two of you being reunited are much better.

National Cleaning for a Reason Week (April 18 – 24): Cleaning For A Reason is a nonprofit organization that helps women undergoing cancer treatment keep a clean house. Its partner cleaning services donate 2 free housecleaning sessions to eligible women (1 per month for 2 months). During this special week the organization and its partners try to increase cancer awareness and do even more free cleanings.

National Volunteer Week (April 15 – 21): This week we celebrate volunteer service and recognize the power of volunteers to make a difference in their communities. If you don’t already volunteer, consider exploring volunteer opportunities this week.

Celebration Days Coming Up For April 16 thru April 22

If you’re a tax filing procrastinator your final days of procrastination are upon you! If you’ve waited this long you probably already know the 2018 deadline is Tuesday, April 17. Because the 15th is a weekend the deadline moves to Monday. But Monday is a DC holiday, so you get yet another extra day! A definite win for all procrastinators out there.

But once your tax crunch is over, there’s plenty of other things to celebrate this week.

April 16:

Save the Elephants Day: The elephants need our help. Lots of elephant populations are in danger of disappearing. And even those that are doing ok need help to make sure they keep doing ok.

Emancipation Day: On April 16, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act, freeing the slaves in the District of Columbia. Today Emancipation Day is a legal holiday in DC. This year it’s also the reason you have a full 2 days after the normal tax filing deadline to get it done … but that’s not quite the right reason to celebrate this day.

National Bean Counters’ Day: Today we honor the accountants who help you keep your finances in order. Although we often use “bean counter” to mean a nit-picky pain in the butt, we all know those nit-pickers do important work. It’s not easy keeping us in line! So thank your favorite bean counter today.

April 17:

Bat Appreciation Day: Yes, there is plenty to appreciate about bats! Like their appetite for mosquitoes. Or how they pollinate lots of our food plants.

Tax Day: Hopefully you already knew this, but this year April 17 is the last day to file your taxes in the U.S. (unless you got an extension). And hopefully you haven’t actually waited until today!

International Haiku Poetry Day: Celebrate haiku today! Hmmm … maybe a haiku about taxes? Although we’’d prefer one about bats. But writing poetry of any sort is just not our strong suit. So we’ll just read yours.

Blah Blah Blah Day: Don’t you just love Wellcat holidays? Apparently today is the day to do all the things everybody’s been nagging (blah, blah, blahing?) you about. Like getting those taxes in on time!

April 18:

Pet Owner’s Independence Day: Today you send your pets to work in your place. And you take their place lounging around all day. This is another fun & silly day from wellcat.com.

National Columnists’ Day: This day honors news columnists and recognizes their value in evoking emotions around news stories. The date honors columnist Ernie Pyle who was killed while working as a correspondent in Japan during World War II.

April 19:

National Garlic Day: Keep the vampires away & do your body good with garlic. But don’t stop at one day. Make garlic a regular part of your meals.

National High Five Day: Spend the 3rd Thursday in April giving high fives. Why? For any reason at all. Or for no reason at all. But mostly because that’s what this celebration is all about. Seriously. It’s just that simple. Now that deserves a high five! ;)

Oklahoma City Bombing Commemoration Day: On a much more serious note, this is the 23rd anniversary of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing. The blast injured 680 people and killed 168. Nineteen of those killed were under six years old. Take a moment to remember the victims and their families.

April 20:

National Cheddar Fries Day: A deliciously cheesy day apparently promoted by Snuffer’s, a restaurant chain in Texas. It’s giving away prizes, including a year’s worth of free cheddar fries. But if you’re not near one of its restaurants, celebrate by indulging in your favorite cheesy fries.

National Pot Smokers Day/Weed Day: In case you didn’t know, or you forgot, today is the day “everybody must get stoned.” But do you know why?

April 21:

Bulldogs are Beautiful Day: Celebrate the goofy but beautiful bulldog today. They’re sweet & loyal. And they deserve all the extra love, pets, treats, and play time they can get today. And every day!

Husband Appreciation Day: If you have a husband, do like the name says & appreciate him today! And make sure you let him know about your appreciation.

Chocolate Covered Cashews Day: Mmmm … a chocolate coating makes almost anything better. But when it’s something already delicious—like cashews, especially salted cashews!—it makes for a heavenly day!

April 22:

Jelly Bean Day: Do you love jelly beans? Then this is the day for you. Eat jelly beans. Wear jelly bean clothes (yes, really!). Make desserts with jelly beans. What a glorious day!

Chemists Celebrate Earth Day: Part of the larger Chemists Celebrate Earth Week, chemists and chemistry enthusiasts promote chemistry awareness. This year the week starts on April 22.
