Celebration Ideas for October 21 – 27, 2019

Yikes! Halloween is next week. Which means another month bites the dust next week.

And that means the holiday shopping & partying season is really & truly upon us. But don’t let that stress you out. Unwind with some fun & delicious unofficial celebrations … the kind you can just enjoy without any pressure.

So do keep reading to take a peek and plan your week. And of course …

Enjoy!

Celebrate for the rest of October

For October we curl up with a good book and maybe something covered in caramel. We learn about how CBD oil can help our pets. And how we can become addicted to caffeine.

National Pet CBD Month: Using CBD oil keeps getting more popular. And people who have felt benefits from it often want to know if their pets can benefit too. According to cbdMD (makers of Paw CBD for pets) the answer is yes! And the company created this month to spread the word. It offers a variety of CBD products formulated specifically for pets, with edibles in pet-friendly flavors like catnip and peanut butter.

National Book Month: Beach reading season may be over. But now it’s curl up with a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate and a good book season! And National Book Month gives you the perfect excuse to do just that guilt-free. Enjoy!

Caffeine Addiction Recovery Month: Caffeine addiction?! Is that a real thing? Yes. Yes it is. Because caffeine is indeed a drug. And your body/brain can become dependent on it. Also, just like any other addiction, cutting back on caffeine can lead to withdrawal symptoms.

National Caramel Month: Enjoy caramel in all its sticky sweet glory all during October. Caramel sauce on ice cream. Or drizzled over cake or pie. Caramel apples. Caramel candies. The sky’s the limit! Make your own caramel if you’d like. Or maybe even some spiked caramel?

Weekly Celebrations for October 21 – 27, 2019

This week we celebrate free speech. Possibly by speaking up about the danger facing wolves, the need for a secure retirement, and keeping teens safe on the roads. Or anything else we feel needs to be said.

We also celebrate the people who support our libraries and learn about rodent control for our homes. And we fuel it all with kraut sandwiches.

National Friends of Libraries Week (October 20 – 26, 2019): Did you know that libraries have friends groups? They do! And this week celebrates them & all they do for their local libraries. If you love all that libraries do for their communities, why not see if there’s a Friends of Libraries group in yours? And join to help support your local library.

Wolf Awareness Week (October 20 – 26, 2019): Learn about the wolves’ long road back from near extinction. And why we still need to protect them, because as they’ve recovered they’re starting to be more visible to people who don’t want them around again. Which puts them in danger again. Read more about how different wolf species are doing here.

Free Speech Week (October 21 – 27, 2019): Recognize and celebrate our rights to freedom of speech and the press for this week. And exercise your right by spreading the word about this week.

National Retirement Security Week (October 20 – 26, 2019): Are you saving enough for retirement? Is your investment mix appropriate for your stage in life? And is your data secure? All these and more are important issues for getting to and maintaining a secure retirement. Use this week to learn more and take action.

National Teen Driver Safety Week (October 20 – 26, 2019): If you’re the parent of any teen drivers you want to do all you can to make sure they’re safe behind the wheel. Why not use this week to learn more about teen driving safety and reinforce any conversations you already had with them.

Rodent Awareness Week (October 20 – 26, 2019): This week raises awareness of rodent control for our homes. Pest control companies, you’ll want to share information with your customers. And the rest of us can learn more about these pests and the problems they can cause.

National Kraut Sandwich Week (October 21 – 27, 2019): For this week we make & eat sandwiches with sauerkraut! And of course the classic sandwich with kraut is the Reuben. Check out this list of Reuben variations so you can have a different sandwich every day.

Celebration Days coming up for Oct. 21 thru Oct. 27

Reptiles, and pit bulls, and black cats … oh, my! We love them all and invite you to learn to do the same. Unless you already do, in which case keep it up!

We also clean up our computer desktop, leave the cap locks on, and dig out our old iPod to wish it a happy anniversary.

During all these & more celebrations we enjoy Boston cream pie, bologna, and breadsticks. And we wash it all down with beer. But only American beer.

So let’s have another fun-tastic week!

October 21:

Reptile Awareness Day: Learn about reptiles & the threats they face for this day. There’s lots of efforts to protect & save sea turtles, but most reptiles don’t get much attention at all. But they deserve protection too.

National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day: Is your computer desktop a cluttered mess of files & programs you may or may not use? Unless your computer is new, the answer is probably yes! Use this day to get it cleaned up.

Celebration of Mind: Celebrate Martin Gardner’s birthday with puzzles, games, math, & magic. See if there’s an event near you. If not, there’s nothing stopping you from celebrating by yourself or with a few friends.

National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day: Make and eat pumpkin cheesecake! Never made pumpkin cheesecake? Try this Pumpkin Swirl Cheesecake recipe.

October 22:

National Make a Dog’s Day: This day is all about finding ways to make a dog’s day (duh!). Any dog. So make your dog’s day. Make a friend’s dog’s day. Or make a shelter dog’s day by springing him or her from that cage to head for a real home (your home!). Subaru (yes, the car company!) created this day in 2015.

International Caps Lock Day: HIT THE CAPS LOCK KEY FIRST THING IN THE MORNING & LEAVE IT ON ALL DAY. YOU’LL NEEDLESSLY ANNOY EVERYONE YOU COMMUNICATE WITH! FUN TIMES! 😉

International Stuttering Awareness Day: Learn more about stuttering & the help available to overcome it. If you stutter, share your story to inspire others.

National Color Day: Did you know color can affect your mood and even behavior? Some believe each color has its own meaning(s), and your favorite color says something about your personality. Whether or not you believe in color meanings, studies have suggested real effects of color on our brains & bodies.

National Nut Day: On this day we snack on nuts! And use nuts in cooking and baking. Any nuts will do. Because unlike days like National Almond Day or Chocolate Covered Peanuts Day, this day is about all nuts. And nuts are good for you, full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. So enjoy the day guilt-free.

October 23:

Mole Day: Science nerds rejoice (and maybe math nerds a little too)! This day celebrates Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 1023). But don’t celebrate all day. Only from 6:02 am to 6:02 pm.

IPod Day: Celebrate the anniversary of the introduction of the iPod to the world. It was October 23, 2001. Seems like a lifetime ago!

National TV Talk Show Host Day: Do you watch talk shows? Have you ever seen Johnny Carson? He was the King of Late Night Television, and we celebrate this day on his birthday. So make a point to watch your favorite talk show in celebration.

National Boston Cream Pie Day: On this day we celebrate the cake that’s called a pie. But no matter what you call it, this yummy concoction definitely deserves its own day. So enjoy a slice of Boston Cream Pie to celebrate. Make it yourself if you can. You might also be interested in the original Boston Cream Pie recipe (at least that’s what it claims).

October 24:

Recycle Your Mercury Thermostat Day: Do you have an old-style thermostat in your home? If so, this is the day to think about replacing it with a newer, programmable or smart thermostat. And when you do, make sure that old, mercury-containing one gets properly recycled.

United Nations Day: Celebrate the anniversary of the birth of the United Nations in 1945.

National Bologna Day: On this day we eat bologna sandwiches. Fried if you prefer. Or use bologna in recipes. Even if you think you hate bologna, these recipes might change your mind.

World Development Information Day: This UN day highlights development problems throughout the world and encourages international cooperation to help solve them. The day is especially directed at young people, to help them become more aware of the problems and motivated to solve them.

October 25:

Frankenstein Friday: Celebrate Frankenstein’s monster for this day. Maybe with a Frankenstein-themed party? Or watch your favorite Frankenstein movie.

International Artists Day: This day honors the contributions artists of all kinds make to our society. So buy some art. Buy an artist a coffee … or even dinner. Head to an art gallery. Or whatever other arty/creative thing you’d like to do.

Sourest Day: Apparently we need an antidote for last weekend’s Sweetest Day. And Sourest Day is it! Well technically the day honors a person named Sauer whose birthday was (is?) October 25. But given that the day’s creator changed the spelling, it seems reasonable the only way to celebrate is to be sour all day. And maybe eat sour foods all day too?

National Breadstick Day: Make sure you add breadsticks to all your meals to celebrate this day. And check out restaurants near you to see if any are celebrating with free or discounted breadsticks!

National Greasy Foods Day: Indulge a bit for at least one meal. Have some fried chicken, bacon, pizza, or whatever greasy foods you enjoy. And make sure you have a breadstick or two to celebrate 2 days in one!

Chucky the Notorious Killer Doll Day: If you’re a Chucky fan, this is the day to watch the killer doll in action. Take the day off & settle in for a day of binge-watching all 7 movies! Or at least your favorites.

October 26:

National Pit Bull Awareness Day: Help end the bad reputation of these sweet dogs. Spread awareness of their loyalty & desire to please. And share your positive pit bull stories far & wide.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day: If you have any old prescription drugs lying around, this is the day to get rid of them safely and responsibly. Many communities set up a take back location for the day. Some even have year-round collection sites.

National Day of the Deployed: On this day we honor all the brave men & women who are or have been deployed in service to our country. We recognize the sacrifices they and their families make during every deployment.

National Pumpkin Day: It’s time to celebrate that most-famous fall gourd: the pumpkin! Whether you’re roasting it, pureeing it, or carving it, the pumpkin just screams fall (quite literally if you carve a screaming mouth in one). So use pumpkin in at least one recipe (maybe one of these) for the day & get that jack-o’-lantern carved to celebrate this day.

National Mincemeat Day: Have you wondered what, exactly, is mincemeat? Well, it’s mostly what it sounds like: minced meat! Traditionally the meat was mixed with suet & fruit plus some spices. Then it could be made into a mincemeat pie. These days many people leave out the meat (we’re not sure why!). So make a traditional (mostly) mincemeat pie to celebrate. Or make one without meat or suet.

October 27:

Cranky Co-Workers Day: On this day we give our cranky co-workers the space & understanding to just be their cranky selves. Maybe even join them in their crankiness for the day! Of course, if you’re not working on the 27th this year, consider celebrating the next day you are working.

National Black Cat Day: Celebrate the black cat! But not the spooky Halloween black cat. No. We’re celebrating the beautiful, sleek black cat that steals your heart with a single look. If you’re planning to add a feline to your household, consider adopting a black cat in honor of the day. And if you already have a black cat, well extra treats & loving are in order! This appears to be a UK-based holiday. But black cat lovers in the rest of the world, don’t let that stop you from celebrating black cats. (And don’t confuse this black cat celebration with Black Cat Appreciation Day in August).

Mother-in-Law Day: Treat your mother-in-law to a special day. Yes, even if you don’t have the best relationship. After all, she raised the person you loved enough to marry.

National American Beer Day: Enjoy your favorite American beer to celebrate this day. No imports allowed! Maybe your could buy your mother-in-law an American beer …
