Celebration Ideas for September 17 – 23, 2018

Have you settled into your back to school/back to reality routine yet? Hopefully you have. Routines make the days go more smoothly.

And it’s good to have some structure to your days before the chaos of the fall/winter holidays descends! Yes, they’re a little ways off yet. But not that far off!

But of course we don’t have to wait for “official” holidays to arrive. There’s plenty of days, weeks, and months to celebrate right now.

And once again we’ve gathered a selection of fun, serious, and delicious holidays for your enjoyment.

So dive right in, take a peek, and plan your week.

And as always …

Enjoy!

Celebrate for the Rest of September

Just before those holidays arrive—centered on food & family—we get a couple of reminders for making them even better … By learning to avoid foodborne illnesses and safeguarding our pictures & videos of the events.

And we take some time to learn about, marvel at, and possibly even destress in some of our country’s awe-inspiring wilderness areas.

Save Your Photos Month: Don’t lose your precious photos & videos. Learn how to organize and protect them. Attend a Save Your Photos Month event near you. Or sign up for the Online Summit.

National Wilderness Month: For September we recognize the important role wilderness areas play in the world and our lives. Let’s vow to protect what’s left, and take the time to enjoy it. Visit The Wilderness Society’s website to learn more about why wilderness is important and where you can still find true wilderness.

Food Safety Education Month: Do you know how to avoid foodborne illnesses? Are you sure? During September, take the time to learn more about preparing & storing food safely.

Weekly Celebrations for Sept. 17 – 23

For the 3rd week in September we fight pollution. Both in the environment—create less waste—and in our homes—bring in some plants. And postdocs get a bit of recognition.

National Indoor Plant Week (Sept. 17 – 21): Indoor plants help clean the air and even increase morale. So celebrate them for this week! If you already have indoor plants, make sure you’re giving them the TLC they need to thrive. If you don’t have plants, consider getting some … or at least one to get started with.

Pollution Prevention Week (Sept. 17 – 23): P2 Week is a time for everyone to minimize pollution. Yes, even individuals. For example, we can use less, which creates less waste and less pollution. We can also reward businesses committed to reducing pollution by giving them our business and avoiding companies without the same commitment.

National Postdoc Appreciation Week (Sept. 17 – 21): Postdoctoral students add significant value to research & discovery in all fields. And they deserve recognition for this (yes, beyond finally getting that Ph.D. behind their names). Even the US House of Representatives admitted this when it officially recognized this week in 2010.

Celebration Days coming up for Sept. 17 thru Sept. 23

For this week we get musical & patriotic & environmental.

We enjoy cheeseburgers & pecan cookies & pot pies, among other goodies.

We protect elephants & rabbits. Talk about cancer & restless legs. And so much more.

Here’s to making it another fun-tastic week!

September 17:

International Country Music Day: Country music lovers all over the world unite to celebrate this musical style born in the American South. Recruit newcomers to the country music loving community, too!

Constitution Day and Citizenship Day: This day commemorates the signing of the US Constitution on September 17, 1787 and recognizes all US citizens—whether natural-born or naturalized. It began in 1940 as I am an American Day, celebrated in May. Congress moved it to September 17 in 1952 and renamed it Citizenship Day. The name changed once more in 2004. Celebrate the day learning more about your rights and opportunities as a US citizen.

National Monte Cristo Day: Listening to country music and learning about your Constitutional rights & responsibilities can make a person hungry! Fuel your listening & learning sessions with a Monte Cristo. Enjoy a World Famous Monte Cristo at Bennigan’s, which created the day in 2015. Or make one yourself. This recipe includes lots of tips to make it perfect.

September 18:

National Ceiling Fan Day: Turning up your air conditioning temperature (or turning it off completely) and using a ceiling fan can help you save energy. And money! If you’re not already doing this, try it for this day. If you are already doing it, help spread the word.

National Cheeseburger Day: It’s another delicious day! On the 17th we had melty cheese on ham & turkey. And just one day later it’s melty cheese on hamburger patties! How can you go wrong with melty cheese?! Head out for your favorite restaurant burger or make them yourself. The day doesn’t say we can’t embellish our cheeseburgers, so we vote for this Bacon Cheeseburger recipe.

International Day Against DRM: Digital Rights Management (DRM) controls what you can do with digital files/software/etc created by others. That’s why opponents prefer to call it Digital Restrictions Management. And why they want to end DRM. This day invites you to spend a day avoiding anything locked down by DRM and imagining a world without DRM.

September 19:

Talk Like a Pirate Day: Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know about this day. But do you know how it all started? With a couple of guy being guys (i.e. being weird) & creating a holiday they barely remembered to celebrate for several years. And then they sent an email ..

National Butterscotch Pudding Day: If you love butterscotch pudding, this is your day to indulge! Since homemade is often best, check out this simple recipe.

September 20:

National Fried Rice Day: It’s the very first ever annual National Fried Rice Day! Benihana created the day and for its inaugural event will try to win the Guinness World Records title for longest cooking marathon … with 42 hours of cooking fried rice! That rice will be donated to its food bank partners. But on the 20th you can get free fried rice when you purchase an entree.

National String Cheese Day: It’s also the 2nd annual celebration of string cheese. Peel it or chomp it, it’s all up to you. Just make sure you eat some in celebration of this day. Can’t/don’t eat dairy? Daiya’s got you covered, with their recently-introduced vegan string cheeses!

National Teach Ag Day: This day recognizes the importance of agricultural education and those who teach it. It it part of the National Teach Ag Campaign from the National Association of Agricultural Educators.

September 21:

International Grenache Day: Celebrate with a glass or two of this often overlooked red wine.

National Pecan Cookie Day: Does grenache pair well with pecan cookies? We’re not sure, but this seems like a great opportunity to find out! Buy or make some pecan cookies, and munch on them while sipping your wine. Ahhhh …

National Doodle Day: This is a fundraising event from Epilepsy Action, a registered charity in England. Celebrities and illustrators create doodles and you can bid on them. Winners get the doodle and Epilepsy Action gets funds to continue helping people control their epilepsy, offer support groups, and more.

National POW/MIA Recognition Day: This day honors the members of the US Armed Forces who are still missing in action (MIA) or prisoners of war (POW). (Former POWs are recognized in April). Every year the president proclaims this day for the 3rd Friday in September.

September 22:

Elephant Appreciation Day: This day is for elephant lovers! Read about them. Watch videos of them. Visit them at the zoo … or at a wildlife center/sanctuary if you’re lucky enough to live near one. Donate to their conservation. How you appreciate them is up to you.

International Rabbit Day: Celebrate the bunny rabbit! Wild bunnies & pet bunnies get equal billing for this day … although it is probably a bit easier to celebrate your pet than the bunnies in your yard. You can also use the day to promote kindness & humane treatment for all rabbits.

National Public Lands Day: A day of volunteering to help maintain our National Parks and other public green spaces. Or just enjoy a day of hiking & outdoor adventure. Admission is free to all national parks for this day. Some parks (national and otherwise) are holding their volunteer events on the 29th instead. So if you’re interested in volunteering at a park near you, double-check the date!

September 23:

Restless Legs Awareness Day: Learn more about a condition that doesn’t sound too terrible but can actually make people who have it quite miserable. For one thing, it can make it almost impossible to get much sleep. Once you understand, help spread awareness, too.

National Great American Pot Pie Day: Enjoy a hearty serving of pot pie, full of meats & veggies & a creamy, savory sauce. Marie Callendar’s created the day, so a Marie Callendar’s pot pie would certainly be appropriate. But you could also go out to your favorite restaurant (that serves pot pie, of course!) or make it yourself. Bon appetit!

National Teal Talk Day: This is the day to talk about ovarian cancer. Women need to know the symptoms, because there’s no screening test for this cancer right now. Ovarcome created the day just last year to raise awareness.
